IronKey Workspace W300 (64GB)

Whether you're a salesman on the road, a telecommuter shifting between the workplace and a home office, or just want the freedom to take your work environment from one PC to the next, the IronKey Workspace W300 may be the portable option you're looking for. Like the previous Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Workspace (32GB), the IronKey Workspace W300 (64GB) is far more than a flash drive, certified for Windows To Go, a portable, bootable version of Windows 8 that lets you go from one system to the next without giving up your IT-certified operating system. And with a slim yet rugged design and IronKey's renowned security, the Workspace W300 is our new Editors' Choice for Windows To Go devices. It's basically your PC in your pocket.

Design and Features
The Workspace W300 doesn't stray far from the usual IronKey aesthetic, with a look that is similar to the IronKey Personal S200 ($79.00 list, 4 stars), with a rugged ABS plastic enclosure and epoxy filling to protect against both physical threats, like water, dust and shock and preventing any hardware tampering.

Available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities, the drive measures 0.35 by 0.82 by 3.19 inches (HWD) and weighs only 0.7 ounce. Unlike the chunky Kingston DataTraveler Workspace, it's small enough that it won't crowd out adjacent USB ports. The oblong drive has a lanyard loop on one end, making it easy to attach to a key ring, while the USB plug is covered by a cap that snaps firmly into place, keeping out dirt and grime when the drive is not in use. There is no cap storage on the drive, however, so you will need to take care not to lose it.

Security goes well beyond the physical, with built-in password protection, and BitLocker 256-bit AES full disk encryption. It may not have the hardware-based access protection of the Aegis Secure Key, but the IronKey products have a well-deserved reputation as some of the best secure drives on the market.

Using the drive is a reasonably simple process. The drive plugs into any USB port of the host PC?USB 3.0 is preferred, but not necessary?and the host PC is then powered on or restarted, booting from the USB drive. This may require resetting the boot options in the host PC's BIOS, or accessing a boot manager at start up. Once the boot sequence begins, you'll see the Windows 8 logo, and you'll be guided through a brief setup process. Accept the license requirements, log in with a Windows ID, and you're good to go. The initial setup takes a few minutes, but afterwards, booting from the drive happens in a matter of seconds.

The drive itself is fast, with a USB 3.0 connection offering average read speeds of 300MBps and write speeds of 200MBps. By comparison, the Kingston DataTraveler Workspace has similar average speeds of 250MBps (both read and write). The speedy drive, when used with a USB 3.0 connection, is noticeably nimble.

Formatted in NTFS instead of the FAT32 used by most flash drives, the Workspace W300 is compatible with most Windows 7 or Windows 8 computers. Minimum system requirements are standard for Windows 8 and most Windows 7 machines: a processor with a clock speed of 1GHz or more; at least 2GB of RAM for 64-bit systems (or 1GB for 32-bit), and DirectX 9-capable graphics.

Once you boot to Windows 8 from the drive, all of the necessary drivers are already in place, letting you use the host PCs monitor, keyboard, mouse, and networking devices?but not the hard drive. The bootable OS stays isolated from the host PCs hard drive, keeping the user from snooping on the local machine, and preventing any transmission of malware from one to the other.

Though not made purely for storage, you do have some storage space on the bootable drive. Our 64GB review unit came with 46GB of free space, but you can also use a second flash drive or external hard drive for expanded storage space.

During use, you'll be able to install and run programs as you normally would onto the drive, and Internet Explorer comes preinstalled. You can install Microsoft Office onto the remaining space on the DataTraveler Workspace, and use that to launch your Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files and work on them. Because it reads as a fixed drive, rather than a removable drive, you don't have to install a special bootable version of the programs.

A couple of caveats: You won't be able to access the Windows Store or any of the Windows 8 Apps available through the drive. Also, the size of your primary drive is limited to the remaining capacity of the flash drive. Aside from the differences in storage, the user experience is exactly like using Windows 8 on any other PC, though you may notice the occasional lag when connected via USB 2.0. Once you're done, simply unplug the drive, and it's like you were never there.

For the flexibility of a full operating system that you can use on any PC, the IronKey Workspace W300 is an excellent choice, though many people will be better served by the private browser on the Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight or the secure partition options on the SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB). With all of the features offered by the Kingston DataTraveler Workspace, but with IronKey's excellent security and a slimmer design. As a result, it replaces the Kingston as our new Editors' Choice for Windows To Go devices.

Alex Rodriguez' Charity Gave One Percent Of Its Proceeds to Actual ...

The Boston Globe has a review of athlete charities, finding that many fall short of acceptable minimums in the amount of funds raised that actually go toward the charitable mission. Among the fifty non-profits examined, the Globe says that nearly half fell below 65 percent of revenues going to charitable programs and donations, described by experts as the acceptable minimum.

The worst example belongs to Alex Rodriguez:

A foundation started by New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez gave only 1 percent of proceeds to charity during its first year of operation in 2006, then stopped submitting mandatory financial reports to the IRS and was stripped of its tax-exempt status. Yet the group?s website still tells visitors the A-Rod Family Foundation is a nonprofit organization.

Rodriguez was connected to some illegal underground poker clubs in 2005, and responded by having a charity poker tournament. The event raised $403,862 in 2006, but according to IRS records, ?the foundation gave $5,000 to Jay-Z?s Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund and $90 to a Little League Baseball club in Miami.?

$90 to a Little League Baseball team? Wow.

While the article exposes some athlete charities, it also points out those that did a good job of getting money to the cause for which they were started. Alex Smith, San Francisco quarterback, has a charity that has given 91% of its revenue to help foster teens attend college. The Carmelo Anthony Foundation has also given 87% of its revenue to education and recreation.

Amazon Cloud Player for iOS arrives on the iPad

As timely updates go, this one's a bit long in the tooth. After introducing its Cloud Player for iOS to the iPhone and iPod touch last summer, Amazon's finally gotten around to rolling out a version for iPad owners. The updated app, which is seeing a version bump to 2.0, now sports a tweaked UI and a cache size management tool. Other than that, it's still the same "free" streaming music service, offering 5GB of complementary storage, access to Amazon mp3 purchases (AutoRip CDs included) and any AAC-tracks from your current iTunes library. You can grab it now at the source below. Go ahead, it might mend Norah's little broken heart(s).

Radioactive waste leaking from tanks at Washington state nuclear site

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Six underground storage tanks at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation along the Columbia River in Washington state were recently found to be leaking radioactive waste, but there is no immediate risk to human health, state and federal officials said on Friday.

The seeping waste adds to decades of soil contamination caused by leaking storage tanks at Hanford in the past and threatens to further taint groundwater below the site but poses no near-term danger of polluting the Columbia River, officials said.

The newly discovered leaks were revealed by Governor Jay Inslee a week after the U.S. Energy Department disclosed that radioactive waste was found to be escaping from one tank at Hanford.

Inslee said he was informed on Friday by outgoing U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu that a total of six of the aging, single-walled tanks were leaking radioactive waste.

"There is no immediate or near-term health risk associated with these newly discovered leaks, which are more than 5 miles from the Columbia River," Inslee said in a statement released by his office. "But nonetheless this is disturbing news for all Washingtonians."

The governor said Chu told him that his department initially missed the other five leaking tanks because staff there did not adequately analyze data.

"This certainly raises serious questions about the integrity of all 149 single-shell tanks with radioactive liquid and sludge at Hanford," he said.

The Energy Department issued a brief statement acknowledging that six waste tanks were found to be leaking and adding that there was "no immediate public health risk."

Four of the tanks in question, including the two biggest of the group, are known to have leaked waste in the past as well, Suzanne Dahl, the tank waste treatment manager for the state Department of Ecology, told Reuters.

"It points to the age of the tanks and how there's going to be an increased probability of this happening in the future," she said. "When waste is in the tanks, it's manageable. Once it's out of the tanks and in the soil, it's much harder to manage it, remove it, and down the road you're adding to contamination in the groundwater that already exists."

DECLINING LIQUID LEVELS

The Energy Department said a week ago that declining liquid levels in one tank at Hanford showed it was leaking at a rate of 150 to 300 gallons (568 to 1,136 liters) per year.

It subsequently informed state officials that a second, larger tank was leaking at about the same rate, while the four smaller tanks were leaking at a rate of about 15 gallons per year, Dahl said.

The Department of Energy said last week that monitoring wells have identified no significant changes in concentrations of chemicals or radionuclides in the soil.

The two biggest tanks at issue have capacities of about 750,000 gallons and 500,000 gallons, while the four others are designed to hold up to 55,000 gallons, Dahl said. All were constructed many decades ago.

The 586-square-mile (1,518-square-km) Hanford Nuclear Reservation was established near the town of Hanford in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. government program that developed the first atomic bombs.

Production of plutonium materials at the site continued through the Cold War and ended there in 1989 as work shifted to cleanup of nuclear and chemical waste at Hanford, considered one of the largest and most complex such projects in the country.

Weapons production at the site resulted in more than 43 million cubic yards of radioactive waste and 130 million cubic yards of contaminated soil and debris, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which says that approximately 475 billion gallons of contaminated water have been discharged into the soil.

As part of the cleanup, as much remaining liquid waste as possible was pumped out of the older single-shell tanks into sturdier double-walled tanks in a process completed in 2005, Dahl said.

But sludge, mud-like waste and pockets of liquid remained behind in the older tanks, and it is that material that was found to be seeping in the soil again from six tanks, she said. According to the DOE, one of those tanks currently holds about 447,000 gallons of radioactive sludge.

Under the multibillion-dollar cleanup plan, the waste from the storage tanks will eventually be processed in a special treatment plant that will immobilize the waste in a glass-like material that can be safely disposed of underground in stainless steel canisters.

But Dahl said construction of the waste treatment plant was still years away.

Super space germs could threaten astronauts

NASA

This image from a NASA space shuttle mission shows the International Space Station in orbit. The space station is the size of a football field and home to six astronauts.

By Charles Q. Choi

The weightlessness of outer space can make germs even nastier, increasing the dangers astronauts face, researchers say.

These findings, as well as research to help reduce these risks, are part of the ongoing projects at the International Space Station?that use microgravity to reveal secrets about microbes.

"We seek to unveil novel cellular and molecular mechanisms related to infectious disease progression that cannot be observed here on Earth, and to translate our findings to novel strategies for treatment and prevention," said microbiologist Cheryl Nickerson at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute. Nickerson detailed these findings on Monday?at the annual meeting of the American Association for Advancement of Science in Boston.

In space, researchers encounter greatly reduced levels of gravity, often erroneously referred to as zero gravity. This near-weightlessness can have a number of abnormal effects on astronauts, such as causing muscle and bone loss.

Although microgravity can distort normal biology, conventional procedures for studying microbes on Earth can cause their own distortions.

Experiments on Earth often involve whirling cells around to keep them from settling downward in a clump due to gravity. However, the physical force generated by the movement of fluid over cell surfaces causes great changes to the way cells act. This property, known as fluid shear, influences a broad range of cell behaviors, and the shear that experiments on Earth introduce could twist results. [6 Coolest Space Shuttle Experiments]

In microgravity, researchers do not need to constantly disturb cells to keep them from clumping, as gravity is not pulling down on the cells to any significant degree. As such, experiments in microgravity can attain low fluid shear, and thus better reflect what normally happens with germs and cells inside bodies, Nickerson explained.

For example, the most common sites of human infection are the mucosal, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, where fluid shear is typically low.

Salmonella in space
In an earlier series of NASA space shuttle and ground-based experiments, Nickerson and her colleagues discovered that spaceflight actually boosted the virulence,?or disease-causing potential, of the food-borne germ Salmonella.

"Does microgravity alter how Salmonella behaves? You bet it does, in a profound and novel way," Nickerson said.

This aggressive bacterium infects an estimated 94 million people globally and causes 155,000 deaths each year. In the United States alone, more than 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported annually, resulting in at least 500 deaths and health care costs in excess of $50 million, scientists said.

"By studying the effect of spaceflight on the disease-causing potential of major pathogens such as?Salmonella, we may be able to provide insight into infectious disease mechanisms that cannot be attained using traditional experimental approaches on Earth, where gravity can mask key cellular responses," Nickerson said.

These findings are of special concern for astronaut health?during extended spaceflight missions. Space travel already weakens astronaut immunity, and these findings reveal that astronauts may have to further deal with the threat of disease-causing microbes that have boosted infectious abilities.

Microgravity apparently causes many genes linked with Salmonella's virulence to switch on and off in ways not seen in Earth-based labs. The same appears to happen with bacterial genes linked to resistance against stress and to the formation of fortresslike structures known as biofilms. A better understanding of which genes spaceflight alters could help design therapies to fight or prevent infection, helping protect people both in space and on Earth.

"We need to outpace infectious disease because we're losing the fight to the pathogens," Nickerson told Space.com.

Better vaccines
Microgravity research could also help lead to novel vaccines. In a recent spaceflight experiment aboard space shuttle mission STS-135?(the last-ever shuttle flight), researchers brought along a genetically modified Salmonella-based vaccine designed to protect against pneumococcal pneumonia. Analysis of the effects of microgravity on the behavior of the vaccine could help reveal how to genetically modify it to improve it.

"Recognizing that the spaceflight environment imparts a unique signal capable of modifying Salmonella virulence, we will use this same principle in an effort to enhance the protective immune response of the recombinant, attenuated Salmonella vaccine strain," Nickerson said.

Experiments aboard the space station are now permitting microbial studies over prolonged time frames, ones not available during shuttle-based experiments. These studies in space are carried out in conjunction with simultaneous analyses on Earth using the same hardware as those in orbit, so researchers can compare the behavior of bacterial cells under normal Earth gravity. [Top 10 Mysterious Diseases]

In addition, researchers hope to simulate microgravity using machines such as rotating wall vessel bioreactors, which grow cells in ways that mimic how cells float in outer space. Such research helped confirm that a protein called Hfq plays a key role in the Salmonella response to spaceflight conditions. Still, these bioreactors can only replicate about 70 percent of the effects seen in spaceflight.

"Seventy percent is good, but we've missed 30 percent," Nickerson said.

Weightless nematodes
Nickerson was the first to study the effects of spaceflight on pathogen virulence and the first to profile the infection process in human cells in spaceflight. In her PHOENIX experiment, the capsule will mark the first time a whole, living organism will be infected with a germ, and simultaneously monitored in real time during the infection process under microgravity conditions. PHOENIX will fly on the SpaceX Dragon capsule traveling to the space station later this year, and will infect a nematode worm with Salmonella.

"Nematodes are wonderful for studying Salmonella. They're basically one long gastrointestinal tract from one end to the other," Nickerson said.

The significance of the results Nickerson and her colleagues have uncovered extends to more than just Salmonella. The researchers' experiments on the protein Hfq show that it apparently serves as a key regulator of gene responses to spaceflight conditions across a number of other bacterial species, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common hospital-acquired infection.

"It is exciting to me that our work to discover how to keep astronauts healthy during spaceflight may translate into novel ways to prevent infectious diseases here on Earth," Nickerson said.

Doubt on Fed easing hits shares, commodities

LONDON (Reuters) - World share markets fell and the dollar and safe-haven assets rose on Thursday, a day after minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting cast doubts over how much longer the U.S. central bank would stick to its stimulus plan.

After the minutes were released the euro skidded to a six-week low against the dollar of $1.3235, Asian shares experienced their worst day in seven months and gold hit its lowest price since last July, at $1,554.49 an ounce.

"Disagreement over the current path is causing concern for a market that demands certainty," Ben Taylor, a trader at CMC Markets, said of evidence Fed officials were divided on policy.

MSCI's world equity index <.miwd00000pus>, which only on Wednesday had touched a 4-1/2 year high, fell 0.5 percent as the benchmark S&P 500 index <.spx> suffered its steepest daily percentage decline since mid-November.

European markets joined in the selloff with the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> shedding 0.5 percent, led lower by the banks <.sxip>, which have been at forefront of recent gains. London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> were all down as much as 0.7 percent.

However, market sentiment could get some support from the release of first reading from February Purchasing Managers' Indexes (PMIs) from across Europe later in the day.

The euro-zone composite PMI is expected to have risen for a fourth consecutive month in February to around 49.0, adding to evidence that economic conditions across the recession-hit region are gradually improving.

The PMI reading would still leave the composite index below the 50 mark which separates expansion from contraction and analysts estimate it would be consistent with a small fall in GDP for a fourth consecutive quarter.

In the fixed income market, German bonds, normally considered a safe haven, saw prices rise with the main Bund futures contract up 30 ticks to 142.85. The move reversed a fall seen on Wednesday but kept the contract within a narrow band before an Italian general election this weekend.

Spain was set to test market sentiment for peripheral euro zone debt with the sale of up to four billion euros of new paper.

The dollar followed up a big gain on Wednesday against a basket of major currencies to add a further 0.1 percent, although it dipped slightly against the yen to 93.41.

Among commodities, London copper struck its lowest in nearly two months, at $7,880 a metric ton, while crude oil extended losses after posting its biggest daily fall so far this year on Wednesday.

Fungicide Use Surges, Largely Unmonitored

Fungicide spray Fungicide use is rising, but experts warn that there is inadequate environmental monitoring and information on the chemicals' safety. Image: Flickr/CIAT

Glenn Waller's 100 acres of soybeans in Washington County, Georgia, are the highest yielding in the state. But the "Mr. Efficiency" award winner is worried about rust.

Soybean farmers in the Southeast survived a bout with the crop-destroying fungus in 2005 by using pesticides to halt its spread. But Waller remains worried about a rust resurgence.

"I'm afraid we're going to kind of put it on the back burner and it's going to jump back up and get us,? he said.

Waller, who has farmed for 51 years, increasingly has turned to fungicides to ward off pests and increase his crop yields. Farmers around the country are doing the same, causing an unprecedented surge in fungicide use. But as widespread contamination of waterways near these farms emerges, experts warn that there is inadequate environmental monitoring and information on the chemicals' safety.

"It's concerning," said Jason Belden, an environmental toxicologist at Oklahoma State University. "We have limited toxicological data for a lot of these compounds."

Fungicides are contaminating the majority of water bodies tested in states where there is heavy use, such as in Maine, Idaho and Wisconsin. Some are known to be highly toxic to aquatic creatures, but little is known about whether they are actually harming frogs or other animals in the environment. The potential threats to people are unknown, with new research on lab mice linking them to obesity.

Farmers have historically sprayed fungicides to stop disease. But over the past decade, in an effort to squeeze extra bushels from their crops, they have been spraying more kinds of fungicides on more acres. Wheat, corn, soybeans, citrus and cotton are among the crops that often are sprayed.

The fungicide explosion prompted Kathryn Kuivila, an environmental organic chemist with the U.S. Geological Survey, to see if fungicides were escaping farms and winding up in nearby streams. In a 2012 study of 33 fungicides used on potatoes, Kuivila's lab found that 75 percent of surface waters tested and 58 percent of ground water samples were contaminated with traces of at least one fungicide.

A fungicide called boscalid???used on a variety of crops from food to turf grass???was the most common, found in 72 percent of water samples. The team tested 24 bodies of ground water and shallow water in Maine, Idaho and Wisconsin; the scientists noted that the results may vary nationwide.

The fungicides were found below levels that would kill creatures at the bottom of the food web, such as zooplankton and amphipods, the authors said. But Belden said that doesn't mean there's no threat. Fungicides degrade rapidly so monthly testing in water might not "see all the pulses" of fungicides application, he said. More work is needed to get a better idea of how much aquatic creatures are exposed.

"Is it a red alert that these things should be banned? I don't think so," Belden said. "Is it an alert that we need to do a lot more research relatively quickly to figure out what's going on? I do think that."

There is little information from manufacturers on how much is applied to crops. But all signs suggest that fungicides are now in vogue.

With an estimated $8-billion global market in 2005, before the recent surge, industry experts now predict $21 billion worth of fungicides will be sold annually by 2017.

Spraying of soybean crops quadrupled between 2002 and 2006 in an effort to fight Asian Soybean Rust, according to the latest data available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Rust is a windblown disease that attacks soybean leaves, causing lesions and eventually killing the plant.

Clive Davis fires back after Kelly Clarkson slam

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Thanks to Kelly Clarkson, the soundtrack to Clive Davis' life is more discord than harmony these days.

With the release this week of his memoir, "The Soundtrack of My Life," the legendary music mogul made headlines for revealing, among other things, that he is bisexual and clashed with his "American Idol" prot?g?.

Davis claims in the tell-all that Clarkson "burst into hysterical sobbing" after first hearing her hit songs "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and fought to cut them from her 2004 album, "Breakaway."

"It was a very tough conversation, and it didn't get any easier when Kelly burst into hysterical sobbing," he writes. "We all just sat there and she cried for a several minutes."

Clarkson -- who recently earned rave reviews for her not-lip-synched performance??of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at the recent presidential inauguration -- remembers their dispute very differently, and slammed the record producer Tuesday for "spreading false information" about her and her music.

"I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans," she wrote on WhoSay.

"It feels like a violation. Growing up is awesome because you learn you don't have to cower to anyone -- even Clive Davis."

Clarkson acknowledged that she "did cry in his office once," but it was in response to his censure of her autobiographical song "Because of You."

"I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 's----- writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.' ? This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with."

"(He) belittled me and my music and completely sabotaged ('My December')," she added about Davis' response to her third album.

"It never had a chance to reach (its) full potential ... the fact that I was so completely disregarded and disrespected was so disheartening," she wrote.

Davis fired back Tuesday, insisting that he told the truth in his account of their "creative differences":

"I am truly very sorry that she has decided to take issue with what I know to be an accurate depiction of our time together," he tweeted. "Before the book was published, I had every fact checked with five independent individuals who were present on a daily basis throughout it all. The chapter as it is written was thoroughly verified by each and every one of them. I stand by the chapter as written in my book."

Still, the 80-year-old music executive continued to praise Clarkson as a "tremendous vocal talent and performer." ?

"I wish, and will always wish, Kelly's talent and her career to soar to ever new heights," he concluded.

(AP) ? A pair of bombs exploded Thursday evening in a crowded shopping area in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, killing at least 11 people and wounding 50 more in the worst bombing in the country in more than a year, officials said.

The blasts occurred about two minutes apart at around 7 p.m. outside a movie theater and a bus station, police said. Storefronts were shattered, motorcycles covered in debris, and food and plates from a roadside restaurant were scattered on the ground near a tangle of dead bodies. Passersby rushed the bleeding and wounded out of the area.

"This is a dastardly attack, the guilty will not go unpunished," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said. He appealed to the public to remain calm.

The bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Dilsukh Nagar district, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said. The district is a usually crowded shopping area near a residential neighborhood.

Eight people died in one explosion and three in the other, Shinde told reporters in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Mahesh Kumar, a 21-year-old student, was heading home from a tutoring class when a bomb went off.

"I heard a huge sound and something hit me, I fell down, and somebody brought me to the hospital," said Kumar, who suffered shrapnel wounds.

Hyderabad, a city of 10 million, is a hub of India's information technology industry and has a mixed population of Muslims and Hindus.

The explosions Thursday were the first major bomb attack to hit India since a September 2011 blast outside the High Court in New Delhi killed 13 people. The government has been heavily criticized for its failure to arrest the masterminds behind previous bombings.

Home Secretary R.K. Singh said officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards were leaving New Delhi for Hyderabad.

Rana Banerji, a former security official, said India remains vulnerable to such attacks because there is poor coordination between the national government and the states. Police reforms are also moving very slowly and the quality of intelligence gathering is poor, he said.

"The concept of homeland security should be made effective, on a war footing," he said.

India has been in a state of alert since Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, was hanged in a New Delhi jail nearly two weeks ago. Guru had been convicted of involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including five gunmen.

Many in Indian-ruled Kashmir believe Guru did not receive a fair trial, and the secrecy with which the execution was carried out fueled anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep.

What's different? Pistorius and police on killing

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? There are several key points where testimony conflicts between the prosecution and the defense in the Oscar Pistorius case.

KILLING

Police: Pistorius knew his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was in the toilet stall when he fired through the door.

Pistorius: The shooting was a tragic accident; he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

PROSTHETICS

Prosecutor: Pistorius, a double amputee, took the time to put on his prosthetic legs and walk to the bathroom where he fired the gun.

Pistorius: He did not put on the prosthetics and was on his stumps and felt vulnerable when he shot through the toilet door.

HE DIDN'T NOTICE STEENKAMP WAS NOT IN THE BED?

Prosecutor: He had to go through the bedroom to get to the bathroom and must have known she was not in the bed.

Pistorius: It was dark in the bedroom. He thought she was asleep in bed.

SUBSTANCE DISCOVERED

Police: Two boxes of testosterone and needles were found in the athlete's bedroom.

Pistorius' lawyer: It's an herbal remedy ? not a steroid or a banned substance.

WAS THERE AN ARGUMENT?

Police: The couple had an argument loud enough to disturb neighbors well before the shooting.

Pistorius: He and Steenkamp had gone to bed, falling asleep hours before the shooting.

PHONE CALLS

Police: No calls for help to police or ambulance service on any of the four cell phones found in the bathroom and bedroom. Estate guards called Pistorius who told them he was "all right." The call was not disconnected and they could hear him crying.

Pistorius: He called the manager of the housing estate and asked him to call for an ambulance. He also called a private paramedic service. His lawyers say they have a fifth phone that the athlete used to make the calls.

BlackBerry Z10 sales estimate slashed by 83% due to slow launch, upcoming competition

BlackBerry Z10 Sales EstimatesBlackBerry Z10

Some industry watchers had high hopes for BlackBerry?s (BBRY) first next-generation smartphone in its debut quarter, but it looks like they may have gotten ahead of themselves. Now, the Street is revising its estimates in light of a slower than expected rollout and what appears to be a softer launch than many had hoped for.

[More from BGR: Google shows us what it?s like to use Project Glass [video]]

Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley had initially called for BlackBerry to sell about 1.75 million BlackBerry Z10 smartphones in the February quarter. But after his checks following the phone?s launch in the UK and Canada found limited initial supply and softer than expected demand, the analyst slashed his estimates for the current quarter from 1.75 million units to just 300,000.

[More from BGR: Despite rumored of declining demand, Apple?s iPhone 5 is the No.1 smartphone in the world]

?Our global surveys post the recent BlackBerry Z10 launch indicated mixed initial sales with limited initial supply cited as the reason for early post-launch stock-outs at some carrier stores rather than overwhelming demand,? Walkley wrote in a note to investors. ?Our follow-up checks have indicated steady but modest sales levels. With new BB10 smartphones launching in the U.S. only in mid-March or later at subsidized prices no better than competing high-end Apple/Samsung smartphones, combined with our expectations for the Galaxy S IV to launch at a similar time frame in the US market, we are lowering our BB10 sales estimates for the February quarter and all of F2014.?

The analyst continued, noting that ?modest Z10 sales into the channel in the U.K. and Canada? were largely responsible for his decision to lower his Z10 sales estimates by 83% for the February quarter. Moving forward, Walkley believes things will remain bleak for BlackBerry.

?We believe carrier support for BlackBerry 10 in the U.S. is modest, as demonstrated by Sprint only planning to launch the Q10 and T-Mobile only the Z10,? he wrote. ?Further, we anticipate carriers will not build large inventory levels for BB10, consistent with prior BB7 high-end launches, and will initially stock modest levels given the weaker consumer demand for high-end BlackBerry smartphones.?

Walkley continued, ?With our expectations BB10 smartphones will face increasing competition from a host of new Android and Windows smartphones and potentially a new iPhone in 1H/C2013, we anticipate global carrier partners will order cautious initial BB10 inventory levels, leading us to lower our Feb. quarter and F2014 BB10 estimates.?

Canaccord maintained its Sell rating on BlackBerry shares with a $9 price target.

SOCHI, Russia (AP) ? One year before Russia hosts its first Winter Olympics, this Black Sea resort is a vast construction site sprawling for nearly 40 kilometers (25 miles) along the coast and 50 kilometers (30 miles) up into the mountains. After arriving at Sochi's new airport, there's no escape from the clang and clatter of the drilling, jackhammering and mixing of cement that drowns out the hum of the sea and the birdsong.

For Russia and its leadership, the 2014 Sochi Games is not just a major sports event but a point of national pride. President Vladimir Putin has made the Olympics his personal project and, determined to use them to showcase a powerful and prosperous Russia, has spared no expense to make sure the games are a success.

On Thursday, Putin will be in Sochi to preside over a lavish celebration marking the one-year countdown to the opening ceremony on Feb. 7, 2014.

"The project is under his permanent control and we enjoy the full government support," Sochi organizing committee head Dmitry Chernyshenko said. "This really is his games because he recognizes the power of these games, the greatest ever catalyst to accelerate positive change."

The current overall price tag for the games is $51 billion, more than four times as much as Russia estimated when it was awarded the Olympics in 2007. This would make Sochi the most expensive Olympics in history, surpassing the $40 billion that China is believed to have splashed out for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. For Sochi, at least half the money is coming from state coffers, with most of the rest being put forward by state-controlled companies and Russian tycoons.

The costs are high because they include extensive infrastructure development in addition to construction of the Olympic venues, almost all of which had to be built from scratch. Most of the sports venues have already been completed or will be in the next few months, while armies of workers are busy building hotels and additional Olympic facilities, including two of the three athletes' villages and the media center.

Almost every major street and highway is affected by road works, further snarling the traffic that can make a 25-kilometer (15-mile) ride into town from the airport take more than two hours.

The sheer scale of the construction is staggering, but the head of the local organizing committee is confident that everything will be ready for the games.

"We're building all the infrastructure right on schedule and within the budget," Chernyshenko said.

The 2014 Games, which run through Feb. 23, will feature more than 3,000 athletes competing in seven sports and 15 disciplines for a total of 98 medal events. The sports program includes 12 new events, including women's ski jumping and slopestyle snowboarding and skiing.

This city in southern Russia once seemed an unusual choice for the Winter Games. With its lush subtropical climate, Sochi was previously known only as a summer sea resort where hotels with rude Soviet-style service catered to undemanding tourists from provincial Russia. The snow-capped peaks to the northeast saw little downhill skiing, an elitist and unpopular sport in Soviet times.

But in recent years, the mountains above the city have been transformed into a modern ski resort, with cable cars, cozy chalets and new hotels. Free Wi-Fi is ubiquitous, even at 2,300 meters (7,600 feet). Russia hopes the games will put Sochi on the map as a year-round international resort.

"It's (a) once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the country and for the entire region," Chernyshenko said. "Preparations for the games are like a magic wand. Once you've waved with it, you can really accelerate the changes and speed up all the processes."

All of the indoors sports, including figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey and curling, will be held down on the Black Sea coast in five new arenas which have already been completed. The only remaining arena to be commissioned is the Olympic Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held.

This winter and spring, Sochi is hosting 22 test events at the same venues where the Olympic athletes will compete next year.

Cross-country skiers who took part in a test event last weekend praised the courses but said they were taken aback by the high level of security.

"I've never been in a place where there's this much security, this many security officers, this many checkpoints," said Noah Hoffman, a member of the U.S. cross-country ski team. "It's twofold: It makes you feel very safe, but at the same time it's a little bit of a hassle. I don't know if there's a big security threat here, but they certainly have everything under control."

From the entrance to the cable car at the foot of the mountain to the slopes at the top, security guards and volunteers checked credentials every step of the way. Athletes, journalists and the few spectators who attended the test events were stopped when getting onto a shuttle bus or snowmobile, and again when they arrived at their destination. During a single journey, it wasn't unusual for a badge to be meticulously scrutinized at least a dozen times.

Guards with assault rifles and German shepherds patrolled the sports venues in groups, although they did not approach visitors and seemed to try to keep a low profile.

Chernyshenko said the security measures would be exactly the same during the games and insisted that they were no different from those taken at past Olympics held elsewhere in the world.

Russia is wary of an Islamic insurgency that has long troubled a patchwork of predominantly Muslim republics located on the other side of the mountain range. The insurgency began in Chechnya during separatist wars with Moscow in the 1990s and spread throughout the region. In Dagestan, the current epicenter of the violence, bombings and shootings targeting police and other officials occur almost daily. In recent years, however, the terror attacks have largely been confined to the North Caucasus region, rarely spilling out into the rest of Russia.

To the south of Sochi along the Black Sea coast lies Abkhazia, a breakaway part of Georgia allied with Russia, which has troops stationed there. Georgia lost its last remaining bit of territory in Abkhazia during a brief war with Russia in 2008. Relations between Russia and Georgia are only now beginning to thaw.

"I can assure you that law enforcement agencies are taking unprecedented measures to protect our tourists from any danger," Sochi Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov said. "I'm confident that our Olympics are going to be the safest ones ever."

Another concern for Sochi is the weather. The snowfall this winter has been abundant, but the Russians have made contingency plans in light of the warm weather and rain that disrupted some of the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The Rosa Khutor resort, which will host the Alpine skiing and other events, has one of the biggest snow-making systems in Europe, according to its managing director, Alexander Belokobylsky. The resort has two water reservoirs and 400 snow generators installed along the slopes. Rosa Khutor also stores snow through the summer, keeping it packed and under a tight insulated cover, and plans to store 150,000 cubic meters (195,000 cubic yards) of snow for the games.

The Olympic village for athletes competing in Alpine skiing is still under construction, as is the one for skaters and other athletes who will be based on the coast. The third Olympic village, however, is close to completion and housed the cross-country skiers during the weekend's test events.

Hoffman was impressed by the spaciousness of the rooms in the chalet where he stayed, but his first shower sent water streaming into the room below. Even though workmen arrived to fix the plumbing, he decided not to use the shower for fear it might leak again.

His American teammate, Jessie Diggins, whose room was directly under Hoffman's, said such glitches are nothing to worry about.

"Everywhere you go there's going to be one or two little kinks, nothing is going to be perfect, but I think they'll be done," Diggins said. "It's really impressive how fast they were able to put together all this infrastructure. I think with one year to go we'll have even more."
