World's Most Expensive Lego Is Ultra Rare Brick Made From Solid Gold (PHOTO)

This must have been one amazing employee appreciation gift.

BrickEnvy, an online store that sells collector Lego sets, has recently come into possession of what is perhaps the world's most expensive Lego.

The brick is the same size and shape as an original 2x4 Lego brick, and is made from 25.65 grams of 14K gold, according to BrickEnvy's website, which lists the selling price as $14,449.99.

Apparently, the piece -- which never hit toy store shelves -- was briefly given out as a thank you gift. CNET reports that between 1979 to 1981, a very select few company partners and longtime employees were given the bricks for years of service to the company.

Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, Lego Group is now the world?s fourth-largest manufacturer of toys, according to its website.

Lego lovers who don't feel like coughing up $14,000 can always fall back on the company's somewhat more reasonable sets, including the cool throwback "Star Wars" scenes, that were rolled out this summer.

Dallas trucker talks about time in Mexican prison

DALLAS (AP) ? A Texas trucker arrested after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border with 268,000 bullets said Wednesday that he feared for his safety during seven months in a Mexican prison with nine people in a cell with only five beds.

Jabin Bogan said he slept on the floor for most of the time. He worried the Spanish-speaking inmates around him were conspiring to hurt him, although none ever physically attacked him.

"You never know what's going on," Bogan said. "You're surrounded by people that don't speak your language, so you never know what they talk about."

Bogan gave new details about his release at a news conference in his hometown of Dallas. He returned to the U.S. on Friday after being freed from prison the week before.

Bogan maintains he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. Despite his insistence that it was an honest mistake, the 27-year-old was arrested in Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.

He was convicted of smuggling and sentenced to three years in prison, but that was later commuted to time served and a fine.

Bogan's U.S. attorney, Larry Taylor, said about $5,000 in donations covered a fine paid to Mexican authorities and fees for an attorney there.

Taylor and Bogan declined to say whether Mexican authorities had banned him from returning to the country.

Bogan said he relied on a cellmate who spoke Spanish to navigate prison life. Otherwise, he said, it was "like me against 10,000 people." He said he did not see any other black Americans in the prison.

He said he didn't eat prison food at first and eventually made it through his time by imagining that what he was being served was a cheeseburger or slice of pizza. His first meal on the plane ride home was from Burger King.

Bogan said he was first told an investigation would take two days.

"Forty-eight hours turned into seven months," he said.

Mexican authorities have tried to crack down on smuggling of weapons and ammunition across the U.S.-Mexico border. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has blamed U.S. gun laws for allowing weapons to flow into Mexico, where rival drug cartels are fighting a bloody war.

But Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claims at Bogan's Mexican trial that he had hidden the bullets under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer. Bogan had tried to make a U-turn, but was stopped by customs.

An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That reduced Bogan's sentence and allowed him to get supervised release, which he can do by mail.

Vivendi's SFR begins 4G battle in France

LYON, France (Reuters) - Vivendi's SFR launched France's first fourth-generation mobile service open to the public on Thursday, kicking off a race with rivals in an increasingly competitive French market.

SFR launched the service in the southern French city of Lyon and will add Montpellier in mid-December.

Lille, Marseille, Strasbourg, and Toulouse will be added in the first half of 2013, while SFR does not expect to offer the service in Paris until next autumn because of difficulties installing mobile antennas in the capital.

Like other French operators, SFR is counting on the launch of faster 4G technology to lure back customers to higher-cost mobile plans and counter the price war underway since Iliad's Free Mobile service launched in January.

France Telecom and Bouygues Telecom are also building out their 4G networks and commercial launches are planned for early 2013. France Telecom has begun selling limited 4G services to business customers in a few cities.

"There is an advantage to being first to launch 4G to the broad public to show that this new, better technology is not reserved for the happy few," SFR head Stephane Roussel said.

Mobile phones capable of running on 4G frequencies in Europe are only trickling to the market, and the lack of them has held back the development of the service.

With plans starting at 49.99 euros ($64.53) a month for 2 gigaoctets of mobile data, SFR will offer 4G phones including the Samsung Galaxy III, HTC One, and the Motorola Razr. Nokia's Lumia 920 will soon also be added to the line-up.

The suppliers for 4G network gear are Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei.

French consumers are getting access to 4G services slowly over the coming year as operators build networks. In the UK, EE recently launched a 4G service but other carriers must wait until licenses are auctioned next year.

In Germany, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom have started offering 4G already.

Clear Talk latest beneficiary of Verizon's 700Mhz spectrum fire sale

After horse-trading with the FCC and DOJ to gain AWS spectrum from cable venture SpectrumCo in exchange for its 700MHz A and B bands, Verizon has found another taker: Clear Talk, who just signed an agreement to purchase 10 lower B-block licenses. That follows an agreement with Nortex in Texas along with Panhandle Telecom in Oklahoma, and will cover Clear Talk's markets in Maryland, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Nevada and New Mexico. Big Red is evaluating other bids for its lower 700MHz licenses and is also leasing upper C-block frequencies to 20 operators in order "to jumpstart the delivery of 4G LTE in rural areas." Verizon's tat for that tit will be that it can wholesale its services to cable companies like Comcast and Time Warner, making it well worth the company's while, we can imagine.

Kimberly Seltzer: When To Date After Divorce?

It's been a month since she moved out. You sit and stare at an empty couch and bed that once were occupied. Suddenly, you find yourself joining online dating sites to fill the void. You hastily scroll through hundreds of profiles, message a bunch of gorgeous, sexy women and set up a date for each night you don't have the kids. Several men I work with at The Art of Charm come in with this scenario and with the strong desire to quickly "get back out there." They want to know how to get their "game" on and figure out when is the best time to start dating again. Should they date right away? How do you know when you're ready? Many people struggle with this. It's tough to put a timeline on when to date again; it really depends on an individual's situation.

Consider these important questions to help determine when dating again is right for you.

What is the length of your marriage? The amount of time you were married is an important factor that influences your readiness to date. The longer the marriage, the longer it takes to get over the relationship, so make sure you have really dealt with your split or else your dates will pick up on the fact that you are not ready. I also have had clients say that the relationship had been over long before they actually divorced. They were sleeping in separate bedrooms or had been physically separated for months, which will also affect someone's ability to move on.

Are there kids involved? Trying to balance time with your kids, work and dating isn't easy. Being a single parent is stressful and life with children isn't always hugs and sweet candy kisses. Managing custodial schedules and babysitters in order to date is difficult. Moreover, children may not be ready to have another parental figure thrown into the mix right away so it is important to take things slowly.

What was the nature of the divorce? Everyone has a unique story about why and how their marriage dissolved. The nature of the breakup and the intensity of emotions involved are important dynamics that affect dating. There is a big difference between an angry split caused by infidelity and/or financial issues and an amicable ending in which a couple simply "grew apart." If there was a lot of resentment in the divorce, it is important to take some time to deal with those emotions. If not, this negativity might leak into your dates and you may inadvertently talk damagingly about your ex. This will make your dates feel uncomfortable and consequently run for the hills!

What was your dating experience prior to marriage? Many people over the age of 45 who I've worked with didn't have a lot of dating experience prior to getting married. If your last date before getting hitched was going to a fraternity party in college, for example, then you may now find yourself feeling like a fish out of water. You may need a longer period of time to rediscover yourself by learning what your passions are and determining what your deal breakers are.

Was the divorce mutual? There is definitely a difference between a couple who mutually decided to end things verses a couple where only one party wanted the divorce. If you never really wanted the marriage to end, you might mistakenly try to "fix" things by dating others for the wrong reasons such as to trying to make the other spouse jealous, replaying the interaction with your spouse with someone similar or just trying to lessen the pain. Make sure you have really dealt with the issues and have taken the time to heal before jumping into the dating scene.

These are crucial questions to ask yourself after divorce in determining if you are ready to date. You need time to grieve and work through the loss rather than just numbing the pain with a bunch of dates. I have found in my personal experience and in working with so many divorced clients that the more time people take to work on themselves and deal with turbulent emotions post-split, the more successful they are at dating again.

Linda Eder Brings Musical Gems to Vineland's Jewel of a Stage ...

Linda Eder, one of the great contemporary voices in the music industry, is back in New Jersey. This time, she gets to showcase her talents in the surroundings of a new, lovingly restored, Art Deco movie palace ? the Landis Theater in Vineland ? in a Dec. 1 concert presented by Appel Farm Arts & Music Center.

Eder grew up in Minnesota, where she first began singing. A gig at Harrah?s in Atlantic City and then an unprecedented, 12-week run on TV?s ?Star Search? firmly set Eder?s career on an upward path. For several years, she played Lucy in the Broadway musical ?Jekyll & Hyde? (composed by her former husband, songwriter Frank Wildhorn) and now enjoys her role as a solo artist. Eder?s latest recording, ?Now? (Sony Masterworks, 2011), is a compilation of Wildhorn compositions that reunited the powerhouse team in the studio.

During a recent phone conversation, I asked Eder what pointed her in the direction of a singing career.

?It all started when I saw Judy Garland in ?The Wizard of Oz,?? she explains. ?I was extremely shy as a kid, but I really wanted to sing, so I got into choir.?

Things moved quickly after that. Eder met a guy in choir who played keyboards and they formed a performing duo. Their big break came when they were asked to play the Holiday Inn. ?Next, I got a manager and started singing in nicer, more upscale places.? And ? as that well-worn saying goes ? the rest is history.

?My parents thought it was just a phase,? she says. But this phase never ended.

For as long as she can remember, Eder has been a music lover, listening mainly to classical music and show tunes in her youth. ?When I was 10, I was crazy for Eileen Farrell, the opera singer,? she says. But after she heard Barbra Streisand and ? perhaps more significantly ? realized what it meant to be Barbra Streisand, Eder?s musical aspirations took a different turn.

From her collaborations with a number of artists and her time on Broadway, Eder developed a large and diverse repertoire. With so many songs from which to choose, I wondered how she decides what to perform. For the Landis engagement, she will be accompanied by a pianist, bassist and guitarist.

?Certain songs work better live,? she explains. ?And I definitely rotate songs ? put them aside for a while and then bring them back.

?Lately, I?ve been doing songs I did 10 years ago, and they sound fresh all over again,? she adds. ?Mainly, I just do what?s the most fun.?

At one time, Eder believed her performances were guided by what she thought audiences wanted to hear. ?It was almost as if I was putting on a persona to do the music.?

But things changed with the release of ?The Other Side of Me? in 2008. While marking a fairly dramatic departure from her previous material, Eder says the music on this record is closer to what she likes best: ?I play guitar and write music, and it?s country pop.?

How did listeners react? ?They liked it,? she says. ?I don?t think I lost any fans. In fact, I think I broadened my audience because of that album.?

About her time on Broadway: Did she enjoy that experience and does she consider a return to the musical theater stage anytime soon?

?When I was younger, I wanted to do everything,? Eder recalls. ?I had ambition, but only so much.? Once she left ?Jekyll & Hyde,? she decided to shift her focus to advancing her solo career.

?Don?t misunderstand,? Eder continues, ?I love the theater ? hanging out with the cast and being part of something.

?But it?s a huge time commitment. And it takes over your life,? she says. ?Since my son was born (Jake, in 1999), I haven?t thought much about going back.?

Another aspect is the physical toll. Eder is a self-described belter, and singing night after night exhausted her voice. Even though artists do become thoroughly immersed in their stage characters, Eder says that?s very different from performing in concert. ?With Broadway, you are given the words and the movements to perform. There is less freedom,? she says. ?In concert, I am completely comfortable just being myself. I can have a great rapport with my audience.?

At this point in her career, Eder says she has carved out a niche ?somewhere between celebrity and anonymity? and considers herself fortunate to have a loyal and appreciative fan base.

Since the album ?Now? is another collaboration with Wildhorn (who has often referred to Eder as his muse), inquiring minds want to know if more projects between the two are forthcoming.

Eder chuckles at that question. ?He wants to work with me all the time.? And she?s not surprised. ?I seem to know how to sing his music as well as anyone.?

But Eder views the recent CD as the completion of a cycle. ?We did this album and now I feel like we?ve come full circle,? she says. ?I?ve worked very hard to establish myself and I?m happy with that.

?Of course, if he writes a song that is just so great,? she jokes, ?I might be persuaded to change my mind.?

So Eder and I talked a lot about her career ? how and when it started, where it?s been and where it might be going. But I sensed that there was a whole other side to Eder than what is seen on stage or heard on record. And I was right. When I asked her to tell me a little about her non-working life, she was happy to elaborate.

?Well, I might be doing a restoration project on my house, or be out on the tractor, or building a fence. I do everything! And I can?t possibly overstate how different the two parts of my life are.

?I?m a little like Annie Oakley ? you know, doing the things that men normally do,? she half-jokes about escaping to upstate New York. ?It definitely keeps me grounded. I love it!

?I always say that I can move easily between the two worlds,? she concludes. ?You just have to give me enough time to clean off the dirt before I go on stage.?

Sean Timmons, Appel Farm?s artistic director, describes the Landis Theater as a ?beautiful venue? that representatives of the regional arts center visited about 18 months ago. The 1937 building had reopened about a year before as part of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment plan in the Vineland business district.

Timmons says they were impressed with the look and feel of the place ? the Art Deco style, the clear sightlines and the wide aisles. They also admired the preservation of the original movie/vaudeville house and how the addition of a restaurant and banquet room could make the venue a one-stop spot for a great night out.

In April, the partnership called Appel Farm at the Landis was forged, allowing Appel Farm, which is based in Elmer, to manage the Landis Theater?s programming and operations beginning Oct. 1

This is a total win-win. The Landis is primed to be an active entertainment spot and Appel Farm, with a much bigger space for productions, will be able to expand the variety and scope of its offerings to include theater, comedy, screenings and much more, in addition to the music programming it already presented.

With good reason, Timmons and everyone at Appel Farm are excited about the future at the Landis. Sounding not unlike a proud parent, Timmons describes the theater: ?It is a beautiful, modern, state-of-the-art facility, with an attached full-service restaurant and more than 300 parking spaces within one block of the front door.? Not only that, he goes on, ?Appel Farm will now be able to present programming year-round and ultimately partner with others to serve a much wider audience than we could before at the original location.?

With all these great things about the Landis, what, if anything, is a challenge to its success?

Timmons says the single biggest obstacle is getting people to walk through the doors for the first time ? because he?s confident they?ll come back for more. ?From surveys we?ve done, we know that people are impressed with the theater. So all we need to do is get them to try it out.?

Linda Eder will appear Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. at the Landis Theater, 830 E. Landis Ave., Vineland. The concert is part of the Appel Farm at the Landis performance series. Tickets are $43-$65, (856) 691-1121.

National Bison Day Celebrates a Nutritious Meat Alternative Driving ...

This is the second in a series of blogs by John Calvelli celebrating the history and conservation of the American Bison.

On Thursday, November 1, Americans of all stripes came together in celebration of National Bison Day.? In doing so, they recognized the unique role that the American buffalo has played in the history, culture, and ecology of the United States.

Grazing by bison over the centuries stamped out our nation?s vast Great Plains. For Native Americans, bison are the subject of stories and myths passed down across generations. They were also a critical source food and clothing.

National Bison Association

Today, sales of bison, or buffalo, meat in the United States are on the rise, and with good reason. Bison provide a leaner, healthier alternative to beef. A 100-gram serving of cooked bison contains 2.42 grams of fat while the same serving of beef has a fat content of 10.1 grams. That difference has made bison meat attractive to consumers, constraining the supply of market-ready animals.

To meet this growing demand, bison producers have proliferated into every state in the nation, with some 4,000 farmers and ranchers in all. Last year was one of the strongest yet for bison production ? a $300 million business and a key contributor to the health of rural economies in the United States.

With nearly 200,000 bison residing on private ranches it might be hard to imagine that this iconic species, after occupying the plains of North America for thousands of years, nearly went extinct a mere century ago.

Julie Larsen Maher

At the time of the United States? founding, bison numbered over 30 million. Westward expansion, industrialization, and the effort by American settlers to gain an advantage over Native Americans dependent on bison led to a wholesale slaughter of this great animal in the mid-19th century. By the 1880s, only 1,000 buffalo remained.

As I discussed in my last blog, efforts undertaken by the American Bison Society, founded at the Bronx Zoo with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, helped to restore bison numbers in the western plains of the United Sates with animals transported from the Bronx. Over the next 100 years, bison numbers rebounded to nearly a half million.

This year?s Bison Day activities spanned the country, from New Mexico and South Dakota in the west to West Virginia and Washington D.C. in the east. Kids and adults painted bison murals at New Mexico?s Wind River Ranch Foundation while South Dakota?s Museum of the American Bison hosted historical talks and a chance for youngsters to try homemade bison-shaped cookies.

Julie Larsen Maher

National Bison Day is one of the signature components of legislation now working its way through the United States Congress.? At a time of deep partisan gridlock, the National Bison Legacy Act, which would make the bison our National Mammal, boasts broad support among both Democrats and Republicans. The bill has 18 sponsors in the Senate and 13 in the House, split about evenly by party.

As our National Mammal, the bison would take its place alongside the bald eagle as one of America?s most recognized and revered animals.

A broad coalition that includes bison producers, conservation groups, and Native Americans has formed a campaign called Vote Bison (www.votebison.org) to urge all members of the U.S. Congress to support the National Bison Legacy Act. Their efforts have resulted in over 76,000 emails to national legislators in support of the legislation, which we hope to see passed this year.

Bison in Support of the National Bison Legacy Act

In the meantime, bison producers will continue working to introduce a healthy and sustainable meat alternative to Americans.? Federal regulations prohibit the use of both artificial growth hormones and growth-inducing antibiotics in bison. That helps explain why bison meat is increasingly found today in natural food stores, at farmer?s markets, and in restaurants.

Bison evolved to graze in herds to avoid predators. The action of their hooves turns the soil and buries seeds while their urine and manure provide critical nutrients. Dave Carter, Executive Director of the National Bison Association, has said, ?As we introduce healthy bison meat to a new generation of Americans, we are also restoring a vital part of the ecological health to our grasslands.?

Julie Larsen Maher

Bison have contributed so much to the history, culture and ecology of North America. It?s time now for us to give back. Vote Bison and help the bison become our National Mammal.

When Parents Embarrass their Adolescent | Psychology Today

The question was: ?What about when adolescents are embarrassed by their parents?? It?s a good topic because the answer cuts in many powerful ways.

To begin, embarrassment for an adolescent is not a trivial emotion. This is an age when developing adequacy on many fronts is what growing up is all about: adequate independence, knowledge, physical attractiveness, verbal quickness, daring, popularity, worldly experience, social competence, cool possessions, or athletic achievement, for example.

Embarrassment is an uncomfortable response to some public exposure that demonstrates personal deficiency and so sets one apart from the crowd. Unwanted social attention now causes a degree of painful self-consciousness for being judged awkward, inadequate, or otherwise clumsy or ineffective. For the adolescent, it can be isolating in the moment and, if it lasts, can bring the sting of humiliation which is one small step toward shame ? an abiding sense of personal disgrace. ?I?ll never live this down!? In addition, fear of embarrassment can have an inhibiting effect. ?I?d rather not try than risk looking foolish.?

Particularly during the more socially cruel years of middle school, one objective of mean teasing is to put someone down and socially embarrass them, be it a rival or a hapless social victim, in either case gaining a measure of social ascendency. The purpose of mean teasing is to make public fun of how someone is or what they do: ?You don?t know that??, ?You?re so dumb,? ?You?re so fat,? ?You?re such a loser,? ?You dress so last year!? ?You?re so weird.? ?You?re so out of it.? It?s when on-lookers laugh that embarrassment gathers humiliating power.

One watershed moment that demarcates the end of childhood and the onset of adolescence is when parents become a social embarrassment to be seen with outside of home, like showing up at school. It?s the difference between how happy the 1st grader is at a parent?s surprise visit to the classroom (?Hey, look?s who?s here!?) and how mortified the 6th grader is at such an unwelcome intrusion (?Mom, Dad, what are you doing here??) The child loves being identified with parental company, and feels proud of the association. The early adolescent, however, feels his or her growing independent status is diminished by being seen in the parental presence out in the world.

Of course, asserting freedom of independence is just half of adolescence; establishing sufficient individuality for a unique identity is the other. So as one differentiates from childhood one also wants to differentiate from parents, contrasting oneself to them and now more sensitive to, and easily embarrassed by, ways they are that you don?t want to be ? in appearance, interests, values, tastes, habits, and other traits. The lesson is: accept that once the journey to independence begins, parental company in public is going to be less comfortable and parental characteristics are going to be less acceptable than they used to be, both because of potential embarrassment?s sake.

When parents are the agents of embarrassment because of what they intentionally or unintentionally do, don?t do, or say, adolescents can feel betrayed and angry. For example, unintentionally, a dad causes his 7th grader enormous embarrassment by lapsing into a term of endearment the man had used in the boy?s early childhood. ?Snookie,? calls the father to his son before the young man is about to leave with a group of male friends, ?I need to ask you one more thing.? ?Snookie?? laughs one of the friends, and then the other three take it up: ?Hey, Snookie, let?s go!? The boy blushed with pain to be baby-named in front of his teenage buddies, to be treated as younger than his age, to have his dad arm them with a nickname they?re going to tease him with and maybe spread around for other guys to use, a name he wishes he?d never been called. How could his father be so insensitive and do this to him, to hurt him so? The lesson is: it?s really important for parents to treat their teenager in age-appropriate ways in front of the young person?s friends.

Or unmindfully, a parent takes the teenager to task in front of his friends, creating embarrassment that places the young man in an untenable position. ?You?re not going anywhere with anyone until you apologize for what you said to your little brother!? Act submissive when a parent is pulling rank on him and he loses face with friends for not standing up to adult authority. The lesson is: conduct the demands of family privately with your teenager, and not in front of friends.

Or unintentionally, a mom who wants to welcome her freshman daughter?s new friends from high school when they come over for the first time starts asking them very specific questions about their families to express interest and better get to know them. But she is acting friendly in a ways the classmates find intrusive and so soon make excuses to leave, leaving the daughter embarrassed by the woman?s behavior, and so feeling embarrassed for herself. ?How could you ask so much about people you don?t even know, who don?t know you? You made me feel like a fool! Why can?t you cool it with the questions?? And next time the mom heeds her daughter?s advice. The lesson is: parents need to declare and promise that if they ever act in ways that embarrass their teenager and are so told, that they will correct that behavior and not do it again.

Then there is more intentional parental embarrassment: deliberately putting the adolescent on the spot in some way, often in the form of teasing, sometimes out of a misguided sense of play, sometimes out of a desire for influence, sometimes out of pure hostility.

So in play the mom teases her son about just graduating from puberty: ?All the girls better watch out for you now!? She was meaning to lovingly embarrass her son into appreciating his more grown up appearance, but he took it like a sarcastic swipe at his sexual inexperience that he was already feeling insecure about. ?That?s not funny, Mom!? The lesson is: if the teasing isn?t fun or funny to your teenager, then it?s not fun or funny, so cut it out.

Or, to maintain influence with his older teenage daughter, the dad teases her about what he fears she will do by embarrassing her to keep her from it. ?Go to a party looking like a druggie and you?ll get what you look you?re ready for.? In this case, what he meant as a warning came across as an embarrassing attack on her dress when she was already not confident about what to wear for the challenging evening ahead. So in her defense she angrily responded: ?Drugs and sex is all you think I ever do!? The lesson is: if you have some important concerns about your adolescent, don?t use embarrassment to get your point across.

Or, the hostile dad, feeling personally diminished after watching his son fumble away the game, deliberately embarrasses the young man to punish him for performing poorly. To feel better, the man makes public fun of the boy in front of some other disappointed parents: ?You carry a football like it was a piece of soap!? When a couple of the parents smile, the boy lets his father have it: ?Thanks for kicking me when I?m down. You?re just the kind of dad nobody needs!? The lesson is: embarrass your teenager with intent to hurt and you may end up doing damage you come to later regret.

It all comes down to this. Because adolescence is filled with enough embarrassing moments, young people don?t need the help of parents, where parents can help it, to provide any more.

For more about the journey of adolescence see my book, ?The Connected Father.? More information at: www.carlpickhardt.com

I welcome questions and suggestions for future blogs.

Why Should Men Get Married? | Psychology Today

Why is it harder to have a good marriage now than in past generations? In the last decade writers, intellectuals, social scientists, evolutionary biologists?and the media have tried to come up with an answer. Writer/actor Ben Stein cpatures the despair of contemporary relational failure through his character "Harry" in his short story, "Men's Club":

"I have figured out something," he said. It came to me on my 45th birthday one year ago. This is what it was. All my relations with women the last 10 years have been terrible. I don't know why. It doesn't matter if the women are here or in New York or in Hawaii or anywhere. Somehow, sometime in the last 20 years, a great rip took place in the fabric that binds men and women together...

...The women feel as if the men are ripping them off. The men feel as if they're being ripped off. Nobody wants to do a G---------d thing for each other. It's like we're all little kids screaming at and for each other in a nursery, and all the adults have gone away somewhere. No one knows how to care for anyone else any longer; people don't even know how to care for themselves. It's like chaos out there."

We certainly have gotten that kind of feedback from our readers on this blog. Men and women are misconnecting like never before and punitive and antiquainted divorce and custody laws are like gasoline to a inferno. This new alienation has exacerbated since 1965 when Daniel Patrick Moynihan first alerted America of the coming destruction of the black family unit. Moynihan was harshly criticized at the time for his startling warning to a sleeping nation. But now for all ethnic groups in America marriage and parenthood have split apart. Now that the national rate of childbirth out of wedlock is approaching double the rate for blacks in 1965 that so alarmed the Johnson Administration, it is a fair question to ask why any men should get married.

David Blankenhorn, president of a New York based family issues think tank,?answers that question. He believes ?that America is in danger of becoming a fatherless society. He believes this is a destructive trend for any country, because non-fictional single parent families are more susceptible to poverty and a whole range of?problems (Fagan). A country built on crumbling marriages begins a downward spiral of increased drug abuse, crime, teen pregnancy, homelessness, infant mortality, suicide and depression (Gallagher).?

Certainly in the black community, where single parent families are most prevalent, we find social pathology at it's most tragic: one third of black males in their twenties are either imprisoned, paroled or are on probation( Butterfield). But the Hispanic and white communities are well on their way to a similar fate. Charles Murray has shown that lower class whites are also now separating parenthood from marriage. These sobering facts have led leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties to agree that fatherlessness is a huge problem facing our nation in 2012.

American is awakening to the most harmful trend of our generation. But where do we begin to seek a solution to this seemingly intractable problem? Leslie Godwin, Executive Director of Parent Support Services in Calabasas California, suggests that the key is to bring men and women back together to raise children together that will grow up with the healthy ability to sustain meaningful relationships. But how is that possible given the overwhelming evidence that the family unit is in precipitous decline?

Nationally syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman correctly poses the paradox of this crisis:

"Americans believe that people should only marry for love and only stay married as long as there is love. We also believe that most children are better off with their two parents. When those two beliefs conflict, we fall into confused or polite silence. Finally we have a chorus loudly and publicly worrying about children. We are all singing the blues about absent fathers and unwed mothers. But the next question is whether we can turn to the subject of men and women, relationships and marriage in a changing time."

That's what this blog is all about.

Schaub rallies Texans past Jaguars, 43-37

HOUSTON (AP) ? Andre Johnson had the game of his life to save the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Johnson finished off a career day by turning a screen pass from Matt Schaub into a 48-yard sprint for the winning touchdown as the Texans rallied to beat Jacksonville 43-37.

"All the good teams find a way to win, no matter if it's ugly, pretty or whatever," Johnson said. "In the win column, it either says 'W' or 'L.' They don't ask how you got it done."

Schaub threw a career-high five touchdown passes, completed a franchise-record 43 passes and finished with 527 yards in the air, second most in NFL history. Warren Moon also threw for 527 yards for the Houston Oilers in December 1990 in Kansas City. Norm Van Brocklin holds the record with 554 for the Rams in 1951.

Johnson caught 14 passes for 273 yards, both career highs; the yardage was a team record. He turned 31 in July, but has been saying for weeks that he's feeling as fit and healthy as he ever has.

"Maybe you guys will believe me after that," Johnson told reporters after the game.

He seemed to be open all day and he was somehow uncovered again when Schaub flipped him the short pass for the decisive score.

"When I caught the ball, and I saw how open I was, I was looking around like, 'Where are the defenders at?'" Johnson said. "I took off running, I kept looking. I thought the cornerback would come from the outside, but he wasn't there. It was just the safety, so I was just saying to myself, 'I can't let him tackle me.'"

It almost didn't come to that. Houston trailed 34-20 with 12 minutes left, but Schaub completed 16 consecutive throws to launch the comeback.

"Something we can look back on as we move through this," Schaub said, "because there are going to be games like that, that are not always going to be a two- or three-score lead in the fourth quarter, where you're trying to run the clock out."

The Texans (9-1) won an overtime game for the first time at Reliant Stadium and improved to 2-7 in overtime in their history. The Jaguars (1-9) have lost three road games in overtime this year.

"I told them afterwards, we didn't come here for a tie," Jacksonville coach Mike Mularkey said. "We had some chances. We just did not make some of the plays that we haven't made throughout the year."

Houston's comeback wrecked big days by Chad Henne and first-round pick Justin Blackmon, who showed that the Jacksonville offense does actually have some spark.

Henne threw a career-high four touchdown passes in relief of injured Blaine Gabbert and Blackmon made seven catches for 236 yards. It was the first time in NFL history opposing players each had more than 200 yards receiving in the same game.

The Jaguars looked like they were on their way to one of the biggest upsets of the season when Henne hooked up with Blackmon for a stunning 81-yard touchdown with 12:33 left in regulation to put Jacksonville up 34-20.

Schaub then threw two touchdown passes to tight end Garrett Graham in the final 5:39 to force overtime.

Shayne Graham and Josh Scobee kicked field goals in overtime and, for a while, it looked like NFL would have its second tie in two weeks. San Francisco and St. Louis finished 24-24 last week.

Henne threw incomplete on fourth-and-10 from the Houston 47, and the Texans regained possession with 2:30 left in OT. Schaub saw the perfect defense for a receiver screen pass to Johnson, who took the pass and sprinted untouched down the right sideline to end it.

"We got what we wanted," Schaub said, "and 'Dre did the rest."

Johnson surpassed his own single-game records for receptions and yards receiving. Kubiak thinks those records may stand for a while.

"I don't know if that one will ever be touched," Kubiak said. "That was special from the Texans standpoint."

Gabbert left in the first quarter with a bruised right elbow. Mularkey said last week that he was sticking with Gabbert as his starter, but he may have to go with Henne now. He didn't have an update on Gabbert's injury after the game and will decide later whether to start Gabbert next week.

With Henne guiding the offense, Jacksonville had 238 yards by halftime.

"You've just got to always be prepared and ready to go in," Henne said. "I've been preparing these last couple weeks like I've got to be the starter, and any time he (Gabbert) goes down, just jump in and hopefully not lose a step."

NOTES:(at) Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew missed his fourth straight game with a strained left foot. ... LB Paul Posluzny took four stitches on his forehead after being injured in overtime. ... The Texans finished with franchise record 640 total yards. ... Texans backup running back Ben Tate sat out for the third straight game with a hamstring injury. ... Johnson went over 100 yards receiving for the 41st time. ... Texans CB Johnathan Joseph left in the second half with a hamstring injury.

Patrick Cote takes controversial disqualification win over Alessio Sakara at UFC 154

Patrick Cote won via disqualification over Alessio Sakara at UFC 154 in a bout that will likely bring up questions of when a fight should be called a disqualification versus a no contest.

In the first round of the final preliminary bout in Montreal on Saturday night, Sakara knocked Cote down with sharp elbows. Cote fell to the ground and grabbed a single leg. Sakara rained down hammerfists, with several landing in the prohibited area in the back of the head. Cote went limp and the fight was stopped at 1:26.

Referee Dan Miragliotta consulted with the judges and Montreal athletic commission officials before the final decision was read. The crowd in Montreal booed relentlessly, only stopping to cheer when Canadian Cote's face was shown on the screen.

But they would soon be cheering as the fight was announced as a disqualification win for Cote. Miragliotta explained to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that he warned Sakara twice to stop throwing the illegal hits. UFC vice president of regulatory affairs said Miragliotta consulted a replay and Montreal officials to call the fight a disqualification, which he is allowed to do by Montreal's rules.

It was a perfect use of instant replay, which is not used widely in MMA. But the question remains on if it should have been a disqualification, which is counted as a loss against Sakara's record, or a no contest, which isn't a win or a loss.

Group warns sin taxes to encourage smuggling, sees gov't ...

From: Philippine Daily Inquirer

By Michelle V. Remo

MANILA, Philippines?A group of businessmen and professionals has warned that the government would lose, instead of generate more, revenues if it implements the proposal to slap much higher taxes on cigarettes. In the end, government might resort to increasing income taxes, the group warned.

In a statement, the Caucus for Philippine Competitiveness (CPC) said a hike in cigarette taxes of as much as 1,000 percent, as proposed by some legislators, would cause a steep increase in prices of cigarettes produced by legitimate cigarette manufacturers and, therefore, would cause a shift in demand in favor of cheap and smuggled cigarettes.

CPC, a non-government organization focusing on economic advocacy, said government would lose a lot to cigarette smuggling. Legitimate businesses will suffer reduced sales, while smugglers who do not pay taxes will be the ones to enjoy higher sales. .

It said the promise of higher government revenues arising from the increase in cigarette or ?sin? taxes would only hold true during the first year of implementation of the tax hike. Starting the second year, CPC warned, the decline in tax collection would be felt.

The group said government might compensate for the lost revenues from cigarette taxes by increasing rates of other taxes, such as the income tax or impose new ones.

?If health and finance officials succeed with legislation of 1,000 percent hikes, sin tax revenues would contract by the second year of implementation like it did in Singapore,? said CPC chairperson Mike Lopez said in the statement.

?To make up for losses, government will be compelled to increase income taxes or impose new ones like the dreaded text tax on SMS messages, which Congress has time and again been eyeing,? Lopez added.

CPC released its statement amid pending proposal in Congress to impose much higher taxes on cigarettes.

The Department of Finance is pushing for the tax hike, a move that is believed to help the government generate much more revenues. The Department of Health is another advocate of the proposal, saying higher taxes would help reduce the number of smokers and thus the incidence of smoking-related deaths.

The push for higher taxes on cigarettes is being backed by the Asian Development Bank, which in a report cited the Philippines as one of the countries to suffer from the biggest numbers of smoking-related deaths if no government intervention on smoking trend is done.

In its report titled ?Tobacco taxes: a win-win Measure for Fiscal Space and Health,? the ADB said the Philippines, together with China, India, Thailand, and Vietnam, are seen to eventually register 267 million smoking-related deaths over the short to long term if current smoking trends continue.

It also said governments of the five countries could benefit from higher revenues if they imposed higher cigarette taxes.

ADB said a 70- to 122-percent increase in cigarette taxes in the five countries, which would result in a 50-percent increase in cigarette prices, would cut the number of smokers by 67 million and reduce smoking-related deaths by more than 27 million.

In addition, the five countries would be able to generate $24 billion in additional revenues a year. ADB said such an amount would represent a 143- to 178-percent increase in revenues generated by the governments of the said countries from cigarette taxes.

MOST Queenslanders believe their pets are the key to their happiness, with dogs and cats becoming replacement children for couples without kids, a new study has revealed.

The Study of Pet Companionship found people without children placed the greatest emphasis on their pets, with 81% of single Queenslanders without children rating their pets as crucial to their happiness.

Only 59% of couples with children shared the view, and 67% of married respondents.

Yamanto pet owner Jason Boseley said his two dogs and two cats were definitely part of the family.

He and his wife don't have kids, but Mr Boseley said looking after huskies Codee and Bandit, as well as two cats, was a big but very fulfilling job.

"They're all great pets and they're our life," Mr Boseley said.

Mr Boseley began working night shifts after his dog became unwell and underwent surgery.

"After the knee operation I decided it'd be better for me to be around in the day while my wife was at work, and then she'd look after the dog during the night," he said.

Human-companion animal relationships expert Associate Professor Pauleen Bennett, from the La Trobe University School of Psychological Science, said pets provided reliable and unconditional companionship.

Ms Bennett said pets often helped to improve people's psychological and physical wellbeing.

"Not only do?they provide unconditional love and companionship, they boost our happiness," Ms Bennett said.

SEC drops lawsuit against executive in financial crisis case

(Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has dropped its civil lawsuit against a former executive of GSC Capital Corp who was accused of negligence for helping mislead investors on a JPMorgan Chase & Co mortgage-bond deal.

The SEC's decision to drop the case against Edward Steffelin, a former managing director at GSC Capital Corp, was disclosed in a court filing Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

"Our duty in all cases is to achieve a just and appropriate outcome," SEC spokesman John Nester said. "Our decision here appropriately reflects information that came to light as the litigation progressed."

Steffelin was the sole individual charged when JPMorgan agreed to a $153.6 million civil settlement last year and one of the few people hit with a SEC lawsuit related to pre-recession mortgage investments gone bad.

Steffelin had been in charge of a team at GSC that selected the investment portfolio for a $1.1 billion collateralized debt obligation called Squared CDO 2007-1, which JPMorgan structured.

The SEC alleged that Steffelin knew the hedge fund Magnetar Capital LLC helped choose some of the assets being included in the CDO. Magnetar had a bet against the securities, the SEC said.

The SEC accused Steffelin of failing to ensure marketing materials for the deal disclosed the involvement of Magnetar. Steffelin denied wrongdoing.

Alex Lipman, a lawyer for Steffelin, said the SEC staff notified him in May that they would recommend to the SEC's commissioners to dismiss the case. The SEC decided to drop the case after exchanging evidence, Lipman said.

"Often times in that situation the people on other side just ignore it," he said. "But to their credit, they kept an open mind."

The dismissal of the lawsuit against Steffelin came as the SEC announced JPMorgan Chase had agreed to another settlement, a $296.9 million deal stemming from its role putting together mortgage investments.

No individuals were charged Friday, and few people have faced litigation in the SEC's financial crisis cases against the major banks.

The SEC also lost its first financial-crisis trial against an individual when a jury ruled in favor of former Citigroup Inc mid-tier executive Brian Stoker.

The case is U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission v. Steffelin, U.S. District court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-cv-04204.

Will Peter Wells' Scathing Review of Guy Fieri's New Restaurant Fall ...

New York Times restaurant reviewer, Peter Wells, lobbed what may be one of the most succinct and snarky take downs of any restaurant in recent memory. Well, at least one that?s owned by a famous television food-show personality. But to the masses that enjoy Guy Fieri?s on-screen persona and sloppy sandwich hijinks on his popular Food Network programs Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Guy?s Big Bite will it really matter?

The review which was couched as a sort of question-without-answer session between Wells and Fieri basically served as a series of things the former found confounding about Fieri?s newly opened Guy?s American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square. The biggest complaints the reviewer had, to probably every restaurateur?s nightmare, was about the food. From the naming of items on the menu, to side dishes, flavor choice or lack thereof, and the inexplicable existence of several sauces, just to name a few complaints. He notes:

When you saw the burger described as ?Guy?s Pat LaFrieda custom blend, all-natural Creekstone Farm Black Angus beef patty, LTOP (lettuce, tomato, onion + pickle), SMC (super-melty-cheese) and a slathering of Donkey Sauce on garlic-buttered brioche,? did your mind touch the void for a minute?

Wells rails on about the quality of service which he found to be lacking, and how much the restaurant toots its own horn regarding its offerings seemingly in a deluded fashion, or just outright gets by on goofy, kitschy items that aren?t appetizing.

Hey, did you try that blue drink, the one that glows like nuclear waste? The watermelon margarita? Any idea why it tastes like some combination of radiator fluid and formaldehyde?

Somewhere mixed in, it?s mentioned about Fieri?s other eight restaurants which the reviewer gathers are not run like this one. And even in the face of recent criticism of Guy?s American Kitchen & Bar Fieri has touted his success of other restaurants as an indicator that he knows what he?s doing. In late October after the restaurant was panned by the New York Post?s Steve Cuozzo Fieri fired back and said:

?I know what I make, I know how I cook,? said Fieri ? affectionately dubbed ?The Human Lava Lamp? by one foodie Web site.

?I know the success of my food. I mean, you can?t have eight restaurants and be doing it wrong, or that wrong.?

Is it possible he has a point?

Look at the location of Guy?s American Kitchen & Bar. It?s in Times Square. This is not what most reviewers would call the Mecca of good taste. Any New Yorker will tell you that Times Square?s main dining attractions are tourists ? of whom really want familiar, easily accessible, and certainly high-priced, all Americana meals. So it is any wonder that Guy?s restaurant new location is more like an adult version of Chuck E Cheese? The place seats 500 and has the d?cor fit for the transient community it serves with dish items and names built for shits and giggles instead of well-savored contemplation. There?s something on the menu called Awesome Pretzel Chicken Tenders for goodness sake. That just screams, ?Hey! We?re here in Times Square NEW YORK CITY and we?re eating at Guy Fieri?s restaurant! Here, somebody take our picture. We have chicken wings with dipping sauce hanging out of our mouths!?

Can it be safe to say that New York Times restaurant reviewer, Peter Wells, may not really be Guy Fieri?s ? he of no formal chef training who studied cooking at the Stouffer?s concept kitchen ? target audience?

But we do understand what Wells is saying. Just because you?ve made your career by chronicling places with fun names and warm Americana heart, doesn?t mean that it entitles you to roll crap in General Tso?s-style sauce and serve it up claiming that you?re channeling all the things people love. Give some of us a little credit. While it?s possible there may be many who will rally behind Fieri and claim as some already have on Twitter that Wells is just some uppity jerk, and there will be those who will flock to Times Square just to take a picture of Fieri?s Welcome to Flavor Town sign that hangs therein ? there will still be others who will remember Wells? following few questions:

Is the entire restaurant a very expensive piece of conceptual art? Is the shapeless, structureless baked alaska that droops and slumps and collapses while you eat it, or don?t eat it, supposed to be a representation in sugar and eggs of the experience of going insane?

Why did the toasted marshmallow taste like fish?

But those people will not be making Fieri money hand over fist. And he never really seemed the sort to prefer critical acclaim to having and operating a successful business. If he wants to be the Food Network version of a Red Lobster chain, we?re sure there?s not much that could stop him.

Wells gave his dining experience a: POOR rating

We?re going to say that the rating stands with the caveat that you actually care about the restaurant review and aren?t interested in trying out the ?Place owned by the Diners, Drive-Thrus, and Dives guy after we see The Lion King. Should be awesome!?

In that case we?ll say the restaurant gets a ?Poor? if we?re not considering the Times Square/Fan of Guy Fieri curve, which really probably makes it a ?Fair.?

Dad says he's sorry, says he wishes he could do something about it, says we won't get the car back for another week or so, but I tell him that it's okay. I tell him I need the exercise and the fresh air. I tell him these things only because I don't know where the tissues are.

We're technically moved in, I guess. Since Dad doesn't have anyone to say where he should put stuff anymore, our things are still kinda stacked everywhere, randomly, on the floor. I see the unopened boxes in his room, though. They're unmarked. I don't ask, but I know exactly what?s in them.

School is okay. People kinda stare, but that?s alright. I?d stare at me, too.

I?m staring right now, but down Mabel Street. They?re doing construction. The pavement is all torn up. There are massive orange machines stuck everywhere. They?re big and loud and they smell bad. Things change, I guess.

I can see workers. Are they staring at me? Dunno why, but I try not to look too close at them, to find out.

Dad says there?s a shortcut through the cemetery by such-and-such street. I tell him I?ll take it, but I don?t. Instead, I found another street that curves where Mabel used to jut so sharply. It goes away from home a little, but it returns eventually. At least it has sidewalks. It now takes me an hour and eighteen minutes to bike from school to our new house.

I have to squeeze past a fence and a garage to change streets and complete this getaway, though. The grass is worn down in a tire-shaped tread.

Whoever lives here hasn?t cared about their garden in a long time. It?s just a mess of colors and branches. There are lots of vines and stuff clinging really hard to the fence. It?s annoying. It?s all overgrown. Normally, there?d be tons of room to ride past and not hit anything, but not anymore.

I decide I?d rather hit the shrubs than the garage, so sometimes the yellow branches catch on my shirt, sometimes they catch in the spokes of my wheels, sometimes they whip at my arms, and sometimes that hurts, but if I go really fast and don?t think about it, then I?m past it in a second and back out on the other street.

It doesn?t hurt very much, though. Not too bad.

Two days before Dad says we?re getting the car back, I?m riding home on my secret but-not-secret path, and as I?m rattling across the gravel past the garage, I see someone standing in my way.

He?s old. Not very big, but he?s in that narrow pass, and there?s no way past him. I slow down, but then he doesn?t move so I stop.

He looks at me, and I look at him.

?Why aren?t you wearing a helmet??

?Why??

?You wouldn?t ride in a car without a seatbelt, would you??

?No.?

?Then you outta have a helmet. Do you have one??

?Yes.?

?Then why aren?t you wearing it??

?Dunno where it is.?

?You come by here every day??

?Yes.?

?From where? From school??

?Yes.?

?So you?ve been tearing at my forsythias!?

?Huh??

He jerks a thumb at the shrubs.

?Oh,? I say.

?What?s wrong with the sidewalk??

?It?s all ripped up.?

?So you rip up my forsythias??

?Didn?t mean to.?

?Don?t let it happen again. Or I?ll tell your mother that you?ve been riding without a helmet.?

?I don?t have one.?

?You just said you did!?

?I have a helmet.?

He?s still looking at me, but then glances at his wild garden. I just want to go home.

That?s when he shuffles to the side so that I might possibly, barely be able to make it past him.

I get off my bike and walk.

?Find that helmet,? he says to me as I am next to him, but I have already mounted my bike again, and I am gone.

It took me an hour and twenty-six minutes to make it home from school to our new house that day. Dad says hello, says he just ordered us pizza, says we need to find something to cut the slices, says we should get a place to sit and eat on that isn't the floor, and I tell him to just use scissors, and maybe we could use those unopened boxes in his room as a table.

I don't mention the old man by the shrubs. I don't think I'll go back there. I think I'll take the path through the cemetery, though. That should cut me down to under an hour again, from school, to our new house.

If I ever do go back, though, I want to ask that old man who "Cynthia" was.
