USADA files formal charges against Armstrong

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has filed formal charges against Lance Armstrong, accusing the seven-time Tour de France winner of using performance-enhancing drugs throughout the best years of his career.

The agency notified Armstrong, former team manager Johan Bruyneel and several other Armstrong team associates of the charges in a letter on Thursday.

The charges came after a USADA review panel examined evidence in the case, which now goes to an arbitration panel to decide. If found guilty, Armstrong could be stripped of the Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005. This year's Tour de France begins Saturday.

Armstrong maintains his innocence. Armstrong attorney Robert Luskin called the charges "wrong and baseless."

Also charged are team doctors Pedro Celaya Lezama and Luis Garcia del Moral; team trainer Pepe Marti, and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari. Because they are so closely linked, USADA rolled all of the charges into a single case.

Armstrong and the others "(have) been part of a doping conspiracy involving team officials, employees, doctors and elite cyclists," said the USADA letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The letter accuses Armstrong of using, possessing and trafficking banned substances including the blood-booster EPO, blood transfusions and steroids. The charges date back to 1998, after he had been declared cancer free but before his first Tour de France victory the following summer.

Bruyneel, who is currently the manager of the Radioshack-Nissan-Trek team recently announced he would skip this year's Tour because of the USADA investigation.

USADA says it has at least 10 former Armstrong teammates and associates who will testify against the cyclist, and blood samples from 2009 and 2010 that are "fully consistent" with blood doping.

Armstrong and the others charged have until July 9 to inform USADA if they plan to challenge the evidence before an arbitration panel.

The 40-year-old Armstrong retired from cycling last year, and in February a two-year federal investigation centering on alleged drug use by Armstrong and his teams closed with no charges being filed.

"It is the entirely predictable product of USADA's toxic obsession with Lance Armstrong and a process in which truth is not a priority," Luskin said. "There is not one shred of credible evidence to support USADA's charges and an unbroken record of more than 500 clean tests over more than a decade and a half to refute it."

The formal charges came after a unanimous recommendation from a three-person USADA review panel that looked at the evidence.

"All respondents will have the opportunity to exercise their right to a full public arbitration hearing, should they so choose, where all evidence would be presented, witness testimony would be given under oath," USADA said in a statement.

"USADA will continue to follow the established procedures that are compliant with federal law and were approved by athletes, the U.S. Olympic Committee, and all Olympic sports organizations."

The arbitration panel could meet by November, USADA said, but Luskin hinted Armstrong may file a federal lawsuit in an attempt to stop or delay the USADA investigation.

"Mr. Armstrong is exploring all his legal options," Luskin said.

Earlier in the day, Armstrong had gone on the attack against one of the review board members, Minneapolis attorney Clark Griffith, using his Twitter account to note that Griffith had earlier this year been charged in a misdemeanor case of indecent exposure.

"Wow. (at)usantidoping can pick em. Here's ... 1 of 3 Review Board members studying my case," Armstrong tweeted, linking to an online story about Griffith.

Griffith entered an Alford plea on June 13. Under the plea, Griffith did not admit doing anything wrong but acknowledged prosecutors have enough evidence for a jury to convict him. A 24-year-old student reported Griffith unzipped his pants in front of her on a St. Paul street.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 26. Griffith told the AP he's innocent and entered the plea to avoid a trial that would embarrass his family.

Griffith said Armstrong's tweet was "an effort to get away from the issues that will be dealt with by an arbitration panel. OK? By smearing me, that does nothing. I'm innocent of that."

USADA has not publicly released most of its evidence against Armstrong. Griffith would not discuss Armstrong's case in detail but said, "He's really scrambling .... I can't wait to hear what the arbitration panel thinks of the evidence."

Euro deal leaves deep divisions, questions

Markus Schreiber / AP

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addresses lawmakers on the decisions of the EU summit at the parliament Bundestag in Berlin Friday, June 29. Chancellor Merkel faces a vote on the eurozone's new permanent rescue fund and the EU's fiscal co-pact. Merkel is reflected in the windows of a visitors balcony at the plenary hall.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

A "breakthrough" agreement by European leaders?desperate to show the world they haven?t run out of ideas to save the eurozone?is short on details and does little more than buy time, analysts said Friday.

And after 21 summit meetings convened to?head off the looming breakup of Europe?s common currency and the continent's ongoing downward economic spiral, it is not clear how much time the deal?to shore up wobbly banks will buy.

?Every time they come out with something, it seems to lasts an increasingly smaller amount of time,? said Guy Wolf, a market strategist at commodities broker Marex Specton in London. ?I don't see anything in this current statement that makes me think someone will go and build a factory in Spain. And that's what we're really talking about.?

With Greece?s economy in ruins, Spain?s banks on life support and Italy?s borrowing costs rising, eurozone leaders broke out the fire hoses at their latest meeting in Brussels.

The new measures, hammered out after 14 hours of contentious talks that pitted Rome and Madrid against Europe's paymaster Berlin, amounted to a willingness to bend the European Union?s existing aid rules to shore up failing banks and try to bring down rising borrowing costs that are strangling the weaker?economies.

Under the latest plan, Europe?s two bailout funds will be allowed to buy bank shares directly instead of channeling the money through member governments. But the agreement included little detail on just how the new measures would be implemented.

It?s not clear, for example, who will decide which banks get funds, how much they?ll get or what conditions will be imposed in return for bailouts. Failed banks would be taken over by the European Central Bank, which currently has no system in place to do so.

With expectations for the summit so low, ?financial markets staged a ?relief? rally after the deal was announced. The euro rose sharply against the dollar and yields on Spanish and Italian debt fell sharply. The Dow Jones industrial average was up more than 220 points in midday trading.

?We have avoided an Armageddon scenario ? at least for the summer,? said Tai Hui, chief economist at?Standard Chartered?Bank.

But the agreement does little to bridge the widening political and economic divisions that continue to threaten Europe?s common currency and economic future.

The summit was supposed to have addressed Greece?s urgent need for assistance. Leaders of the newly formed Athens government, facing insolvency within weeks, have vowed to roll back German-imposed austerity measures that were agreed to by the former Athens government in return for aid.

A volatile confrontation between Athens and Berlin was averted when Greece?s new prime minister last week cancelled his trip for health reasons, and the newly appointed finance minister was replaced, also for health reasons. The long-running standoff between Greece and Germany remains unresolved. ?

With Greece off the agenda, attention at the two-day Brussels summit turned to the more imminent crisis in Spain, which recently asked for a bank bailout that could reach 100 billion euros ($125 billion).?

Some economists believe the bank bailout may be a preamble to a wider bailout of the Spanish government, which has recently seen its credit ratings slashed and borrowing costs rise to unsustainable levels.?While some economists and eurozone officials believe the impact of Greece's departure from the common currency could be managed, Spain's much-larger economy and pool of outstanding debt poses a greater risk. ??

The fallout from Spain has also pushed up borrowing costs for the Italian government, Europe?s third-largest economy and most heavily indebted eurozone country.

Friday?s summit agreement was aimed at calming investors who have been fleeing Spanish banks and government bonds. But it remains to be seen how much investor confidence the proposed bank backstop measures can restore in Spanish and Italian government bonds.

?There are a number of uncertainties about the conditions applied to (the backstop) and the rating agency?s reaction to countries applying for outside help,? said Philippe Bodereau, head of European credit research at PIMCO.

The summit brought into sharper focus the deepening divisions among European leaders, as Germany increasingly finds itself cast in the role of Europe?s financial guarantor. As the Europe?s largest economy enjoys relative prosperity ? thanks in part to massive capital flight into German banks and government bonds ? German voters have grown increasingly wary of further calls to commit their hard-earned savings to bail out their neighbors. ?

Following this week's summit, some reports suggested that German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to soften her steadfast opposition to guaranteeing other country?s debts. But with voter resistance to the idea running high back home, Germany?s leaders can ill-afford to?commit?to paying the bills of other euro zone governments.

?Germany has no good options,? said Wolf. ?They either pay an incredibly large bill when the euro area breaks up or sign themselves up to a perpetual series of transfers to the rest of the euro area. So it's not surprising that they are stalling that decision for as long as possible. Because no politician wants to be saddled with that answer.?

CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports the latest details on the agreement reached at the EU Summit.

UK probing more banks for interest rate fixing

(AP) ? More global banks are being investigated for the alleged financial market manipulation that led to fines of $453 million against Barclays Bank, British Treasury chief George Osborne said Thursday, driving financial stocks lower.

The day before, U.S and British regulators fined Barclays for manipulating the interest rate ? the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) ? to its advantage between 2005 and 2009. The rate is used to price mortgages and consumer loans.

Osborne said Barclays was not the only bank to be involved in market fixing. There are investigations in several countries involving, among others, Citigroup in the U.S., Switzerland's UBS, and Britain's HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland.

The banks' share price fell sharply as investors expected hefty fines and tighter regulation. Barclays shares closed down 15.5 percent, RBS 11.5 percent, HSBC 2.6 percent and Lloyds Banking Group 3.9 percent.

UBS shares were down 3.8 percent in afternoon trading, and Citigroup shares were down 0.1 percent.

Britain's Financial Services Authority cited evidence that Barclays traders were, in some cases, in touch with people in other banks.

"Banks were clearly acting in concert," said Andrew Tyrie, a British lawmaker who chairs the influential Treasury Committee in the House of Commons. "I fear it's not going to be the end of the story, that we are going to find that other banks have been involved."

Tyrie said his committee would summon Barclays chief executive Bob Diamond to explain what happened at the bank.

Though Diamond has decided to waive his 2012 bonus in the wake of the fines, he's facing calls to step down.

"If Bob Diamond had a scintilla of shame, he would resign," said Matthew Oakshott, a member of the House of Lords. "If Barclays' board had an inch of backbone between them, they would sack him."

Prime Minister David Cameron, when asked whether Diamond should resign, said he thinks "the whole management team have got some serious questions to answer. Let them answer those questions first."

The massive fines are unlikely to be the end of the pain for Barclays. The cost of lawsuits related to the LIBOR scandal will likely be bigger, said Sandy Chen, banking analyst at Cenkos Securities.

"Since Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group have also been named in lawsuits, we expect they will also face significant fines and damages. We are penciling in multi-year provisions that could run into the billions," Chen said.

The LIBOR is an average rate set by banks each morning that measures how much they're going to charge each other for loans. That rate, in turn, affects returns on complex products such as interest rate derivatives contracts.

"These contracts may sound exotic but they are the bread and butter of our financial system and are used by businesses and public authorities every day, and they affect the mortgage payments and loan rates of millions of families and hundreds of thousands of firms, large and small," Osborne said.

The U.S. Justice Department said Barclays would not face criminal prosecution, subject to certain conditions, but individual employees or officers could be prosecuted.

Diamond waived any bonus for this year, as did finance director Chris Lucas, chief operating officer Jerry del Missier and Rich Ricci, the chief executive of corporate and investment banking. Diamond said the decision reflected "our collective responsibility as leaders."

Martin Taylor, who was CEO of Barclays between 1995 and 1998, said the bank's board will have to make a decision whether Diamond can carry on in his post.

Though Taylor does not believe Diamond ordered anyone to fiddle the rates, and thinks Diamond should stay if he can "help clean out the stables," he told BBC radio that only the board can make that judgment.

The traders involved in the manipulations worked in Barclays Capital, the investment bank which Diamond headed between 2005 and 2009.

Former Barclays chief Taylor said he was confident that Diamond hadn't sanctioned the misbehavior in the unit, but added that the company's culture might have been a factor behind the misdemeanors.

"Bob runs an extraordinarily competitive and aggressive ship, and that is one reason why Barclays Capital has been very successful in the first decade of the century," Taylor said.

"And I think that when people are pushed to go to the limit, you know what traders are like, they sometimes go beyond it. They don't need to have an instruction from headquarters to go beyond it, they think it is what the bank might expect, perhaps."

"Somebody at senior level somewhere will certainly have known. I can't believe that Barclays haven't identified who that is," Taylor added.

News Corp. approves Murdoch plan to split company

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said Thursday that its board has approved a plan to split into two companies, one containing struggling newspaper and book publishing businesses and the other comprising faster-growing entertainment operations.

Murdoch will serve as chairman of both new companies and CEO of the entertainment company. The Murdoch family, which controls nearly 40 percent of the voting shares in News Corp., is expected to maintain control of both companies.

News Corp.'s board unanimously approved the split in principle. It will take a more formal look at the plan's details in coming months. The separation is also subject to regulatory approval and is expected to take about a year.

The split of News Corp. is a symbolic turning point for Murdoch, the company's 81-year-old CEO. Through the years, Murdoch maintained a fondness for newspapers even as he purchased entertainment companies and built a media conglomerate with a market value of $53 billion. In hearings last summer before U.K. lawmakers, he conceded that he regularly called newspaper editors under his employ with the greeting: "What's doing?"

Investors have already applauded the change. Since news of the split broke early Tuesday, News Corp. shares are up 9 percent. They slipped 32 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $21.99 on Thursday.

News Corp. said existing shareholders will get one share of stock in the publishing company for every News Corp. share they own. The exact ratio could change. Each company would maintain two classes of stock, voting shares and non-voting shares.

Murdoch is hoping the television and movie company will be more highly valued by shareholders who had been unwilling to accept the dour growth prospects of the newspaper and book business.

But he now faces the challenge of making the publishing division attractive to investors. Taken as a whole, News Corp.'s entertainment businesses are much more promising. In the nine months through March, the combined cable channel, TV station, satellite TV and movie businesses saw revenue rise 9 percent to $18.66 billion. Operating profit rose 23 percent to $4.17 billion.

By contrast, the publishing arm's revenues and profits have been shrinking over the same period. Revenues declined 4 percent to $6.22 billion while operating profits slipped 22 percent to $458 million.

The entire newspaper industry is struggling. Companies that once spent money for newspaper advertisements have been flocking to the Internet in search of cheaper ad space. Print newspaper subscriptions continue to fall. Meanwhile, digital subscriptions and ads at newspaper companies have been slow to make up for the decline.

"News has been reduced to being a minor part of what we now think of as media," said newspaper analyst Ken Doctor said, writer of the Newsonomics blog. "News needs to be thought of differently and, in a sense, subsidized."

Investors have long pestered News Corp. to get rid of the newspaper business. Murdoch acknowledged Thursday that the idea has been discussed internally for more than three years.

Still, he said he rejects "naysayers" who doubt the long-term future of the printed word.

"The answer is one word: it's digital," Murdoch said to analysts on a conference call. "People are buying pure papers printed on crushed wood, but they are equally getting their news in many other forms."

Even so, Murdoch plans to put money behind those words. To address the concerns of future shareholders, he promised that the publishing division will be split off with "a robust net cash position" to be used for potential acquisitions.

News Corp. had $10.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents on hand at the end of March.

Analysts said the split will allow Murdoch to pursue the newspaper business with the same fervor he had when he began building his empire 60 years ago. It also contains the possible damage from mistakes, such as the one he made when he overpaid for Dow Jones & Co. in 2007.

"Once the companies are separated, he'll be able to make acquisitions without upsetting the valuation of the entertainment business," said Alan Gould, an analyst with Evercore Partners. "I don't worry about the acquisitions he's doing 2 to 3 years down the road in publishing."

The entertainment company will have its challenges too. While growing faster, News Corp.'s entertainment business is by no means perfect. Movie studios face declining DVD sales. One year a studio can produce a slew of blockbuster movie hits, another year it can churn out box office bombs. TV stations are slowly recovering in the aftermath of the Great Recession, thanks to political ad spending and the newfound health of the U.S. auto industry.

The stalwarts in News Corp.'s entertainment stable have been cable television channels like Fox News Channel and FX, which are growing quickly in places like India and Russia, where incomes are rising.

Murdoch denied that the timing of the split was due to a U.K. probe of News Corp.'s British newspapers over alleged phone hacking and bribery.

Some investors were unhappy with the announcement that all of the company's Australian assets, including the planned acquisition of Consolidated Media Holdings for $2 billion, would be housed with the new publishing company. Consolidated holds a 50 percent stake in pay TV operator Foxtel and all of Fox Sports in Australia.

Another complication: Murdoch said the split could cause a "moderate slowing down" of a stock buyback program. The company is nearly half way through a two-year $10 billion plan set to wrap up next June.

Tips and Tricks for Superior Business Management | Learn to Grow ...

Working Toward Results Oriented Business Management Practices

You should always consider business management practices that lead to positive results for your corporation. Business managers are always looking for ways to improve. It is silly how absurd people can be when discussing this topic, as if they know what they?re talking about. Getting the right ideas and managers into place is something that is time-consuming and costs a great deal of money. Studies have shown that paying more for the best talent will bring a high ROI, all things considered. All companies have to bite the bullet and make tough decisions like this. Any manager that is focused only on making profits for the company may actually lose opportunities along the way. Socrates Theme

What you will find about people in general is they will gladly accept more responsibility just as long as it is seen to be fair. There will always be those who will only complain about it, but they tend to complain about everything. The best way to handle this is to be as open and as honest as possible about the things you want your department to actually accomplish. You need to let people know that there is more involved than you getting a bonus. You can?t expect them to help you out simply to keep their jobs. You need to create a sense of shared goals between you and your department. GPS Forex Robot

It is quite common for managers to not want to fess up when they?ve made mistakes. But trying to cover for themselves won?t fool anybody. It is an adult workforce and they are all smart enough to see what you?re trying to do. You can actually do quite a lot for your reputation and your credibility when you call a spade a spade and own up to the mistakes that you have made.

When you do this, people are going to believe that you are open, honest and courageous. It will take time to realize it but the effect you have is going to be huge and far reaching. But their performance and overall attitude will improve. Eye Floaters No More

A lot of managers want to be perceived as good people and feel the need to be liked. A manager, though, must have a certain degree of professional aloofness. There?s a good chance you have seen occasions when a manager has allowed themselves to get too close and there have been problems. If you form a closer relationship with one person in the department, then others might be upset. You could also find yourself in a situation where you have to discipline that person which will lead to huge pressure. You can be very cordial and polite in a way that is warm but not inappropriate. Without a doubt, what you have just read in regard to successful business management principles are utilized by some of the best companies in the industry. By the simply putting these into practice, you can find a solution for your problem regardless of the situation that you are facing. You will have to tailor your approaches for your own business, more than likely.

Origin of Life Probed in Scientific Contest

In 2011, retired chemist and entrepreneur Harry Lonsdale announced his plans to fund research on how life originally formed. Of the 76 proposals submitted to his Origin of Life Challenge, Lonsdale and his team of experts selected three to fund for at least the next year, with the potential to continue financial support in the future.

How life first developedis a poorly-understood process. Even today, scientists have attempted to determine its origins using a variety of methods.

NASA astrobiologist Chris McKay, who served as a referee to help sort through the proposals, pointed out that the submitted proposals spanned a wide variety of potential research.

"The scientific study of the origin of life is still early enough that there's not even a consensus on how to approach the problem," McKay said.

"That's kind of exciting, but also kind of intimidating, because we don't know what's going to be the right answer." [7 Theories on the?Origin of Life]

Privately funding research

Trained as a chemist, Lonsdale became fascinated by the study of origin of life after retiring young, ultimately deciding that he had the resources to contribute to the answer of this puzzling question.?? He assembled a team of experts in the field, scientists recommended by their peers, to review the proposals that poured in.

"I was very impressed by his decision to use some of his private money to fund scientific research on the origin of life," McKay said. "I figured the least I could do was lend my expertise to that cause."

The unpaid team met in San Diego to study the entries and make suggestions about those that seemed most qualified.

"I was just looking for fresh ideas with scientific merit that could be tested," Lonsdale said.

Though not the expressed intention, all three proposals wound up examining some aspect of the RNA world. RNA is thought to be the precursor to DNA, at one time not only carrying genetic information but also acting as a catalyst.

The winning selection, which received a $50,000 prize as well as a one-year grant to pursue their research, were British chemists John Sutherland at the Medical Research Council Laboratory in Molecular Biology in Cambridge and Matthew Downer at University College, London. They intend to study the prebiotic soup in which RNA may have originally formed, hoping to replicate the process.

According to Sutherland, he and Downer are "privileged and eager to use Harry's money to fund a fresh assault on the origins of life problem."

A second one-year grant was awarded to a Canadian-American team exploring how a complex pool of short RNAs, nucleotides, and inorganic material might become self-replicating RNA. The team, which includes Niles Lehman of Portland State University in Oregon, Peter Unrau of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, and Paul Higgs of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, will construct a laboratory system to resemble primordial Earth. Instead of focusing on only a single class of enzymes, they intend to watch for the discovery and use of any or all of them.

A third grant was extended for a single year to Wenonah Vercoutere of? NASA Ames Research Center in California and David Deamer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who will develop and test a lab simulation of volcanic hot springs and the steps that may have led to the formation of RNA.

Deamer, who also served on the referee committee, removed himself from the deliberation process when his proposal was being discussed.

Although each grant is for only a year, Lonsdale expressed his willingness to extend them as long as progress is being made.

"I'm prepared to spend $2 million over the next five to seven year period," he said.

If one of the groups reaches a dead end, Lonsdale may reopen the challenge and collect other proposals.

Each team expressed their admiration for Lonsdale's vision, and their appreciation of his support.

Most of the funding for research in the United States on the origin of life comes from NASA, which Lonsdale says may lead to a bias that life began off-planet. There are very little international or multinational opportunities.

According to McKay, private funding allows scientists to do things that "don't fit the mold so readily," with the potential to look at research "off the beaten track."

"Private funding could bring innovation that may be harder to find in public funding."

The search for life

Figuring out how life first started may seem like it should be simple ? after all, life is everywhere on Earth. But the search is really far more complicated.

For one thing, scientists can't actually work backward. McKay explained that Darwinian evolution, the dominant process on the planet, involves self-replication, a process only found in living things, and thus can't be responsible for the original creation of life.

The other problem is that life itself has destroyed the evidence. As the planet has evolved over the years, living creatures have significantly changed their environments.

"What led to life has been lost in the long stretch of eons," McKay said. "It's been trampled on by small animals and children."

Finding clues on the active Earth remains a challenge, which is why McKay is so enamored of searching on more stagnant planets. Mars, for instance, has changed very little over the last four billion years, so if life evolved there, evidence of its origin might still be present.

Some scientists consider the idea that life may have begun on another planet and been carried to Earth by a meteorite. Even if that's the case, however, McKay noted that all three research projects selected by the challenge should still be able to replicate the process.

"If life started as RNA world, somewhere, somehow, the molecules making up RNA had to be reproduced."

The process should be the same no matter where life first began.

But Lonsdale thinks that such seeding would be a serious challenge, given the exposure to cold and radiation life traveling between planets would face.

"I'm putting my bets on planet Earth," he said.

Keira Knightley: Is the science in 'Seeking a Friend For the End of the World' correct?

Keira Knightley stars in 'Seeking a Friend For the End of the World,' a story about the final days before an asteroid collides with Earth.

Starring Keira Knightley and Steve Carell, 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' opens Friday.

Like the poor Earthlings whose impending doom the genre chronicles, the asteroid disaster movie could be on its last legs.

That may not be immediately apparent, since a new killer-asteroid film, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," opens at theaters nationwide Friday (June 22). But scientists are making so much progress finding and tracking big, dangerous space rocks that a surprise civilization-threatening impact is becoming less and less realistic.

It's highly unlikely, for example, that a 6-mile-wide (10-kilometer) near-Earth asteroid ? the size of the space rock thought to have?wiped out the dinosaurs?65 million years ago ? lurks out there undiscovered, researchers say.

"We know everything out there that is that big, and there is just nothing right now that's in an orbit that's any threat toward the Earth," said Lindley Johnson, program executive for the Near Earth Object Observation Program at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. [Photos: Scenes from 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World']

Hunting down the most dangerous asteroids

Asteroids?much smaller than the dino-killer could still inflict catastrophic damage if they slammed into Earth. In general, scientists think a strike by anything at least 0.6 miles (1 km) wide could have global consequences ? most likely by altering the world's climate for years to come.

Observations by NASA's infrared?WISE space telescope?recently allowed astronomers to estimate that there are about 981 of these mountain-size asteroids on orbits that bring them relatively close to Earth.

That number may sound scarily large. But sky-scanning researchers have already found and catalogued nearly all of them, Johnson said.

"We're almost 95 percent complete on objects that are larger than 1 kilometer in size," he told SPACE.com. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

Preventing an impact

It's possible, of course, that one of the huge, as-yet-undetected?near-Earth asteroids?does pose a threat to our planet sometime down the road. But that threat could be mitigated, or even eliminated, if we spot it soon enough.

Researchers have several ideas about how to?avert a devastating impact, given enough lead time.

One is the so-called gravity-tractor method, in which a small, unmanned probe is launched to rendezvous with the asteroid in deep space. The spacecraft would travel with the space rock, exerting a tiny but constant gravitational tug that would eventually nudge the asteroid into a benign orbit.

We could also be much more aggressive with our rendezvous craft, slamming it into the asteroid to knock it off course. We have the know-how to perform both of these missions; multiple spacecraft have met up with asteroids in deep space, and in 2005 NASA smashed an impactor into the comet Tempel 1 to determine the object's composition.

Mexico catches son of top drug lord "Shorty"

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican marines on Thursday captured the son of the country's most wanted man, cocaine king Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, who is the head of the Sinaloa Cartel and has a $5 million price on his head in the United States.

Jesus Alfredo Guzman, who is also wanted by U.S. courts on drug trafficking charges, was arrested in the western state of Jalisco on Thursday morning, the Mexican Navy said.

Marines said they caught the younger Guzman, who is known as El Gordo or "The Fat One," in a residential house with an arsenal of rifles, pistols, grenades and about $160,000 in cash.

He was flown to Mexico City and paraded before the media wearing sneakers, a T-shirt and a bullet proof vest.

"He is a key element in the Sinaloa Cartel not just because of his blood link with the leader Shorty Guzman but because he is accused of being in charge of (the cartel's) assets," said Navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara.

The arrest comes just over a week before Mexicans vote for a new leader to replace President Felipe Calderon, who has waged a five-and-a-half-year offensive against drug gangs.

The constitution bars Calderon from running for re-election and the candidate of his ruling National Action Party (PAN), Josefina Vazquez Mota, is running in third place, in part because of the drug-war violence.

Jesus Alfredo Guzman was named as an operative in his father's Sinaloa Cartel in a 2009 indictment in Chicago, which also accused him of racketeering and trafficking.

The indictment alleges that the Sinaloa cartel has transported 200 metric tons of cocaine since 1990, making more than $5.8 billion in cash proceeds.

Mexican officials did not specify if the son also faces charges in Mexico.

Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed "El Chapo" in Spanish, escaped a Mexican prison in a laundry cart in 2001 to become the country's most high profile trafficker. He allegedly commands groups of assassins from the U.S. border into Central America.

Included on Forbes list of billionaires at $1 billion and Time's list of the world's 100 most influential people, Guzman has been indicted in the United States on dozens of charges of racketeering and conspiracy to import cocaine, heroin, marijuana and crystal meth.

U.S. and Mexican agents have been closing in on Guzman in recent months, arresting traffickers close to him and seizing his assets on both sides of the border.

The arrest of his son could lead agents closer still to the kingpin himself, said Mike Vigil, former head or international operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"The Mexican marines are very good at intelligence, especially at wiretaps. They could get frantic calls from different cartel members and be able to trace those calls. If they can get the son to talk, he could also give important information about the organizational structure," Vigil said.

"However, it is likely that Joaquin Guzman would know within an hour that his son has been captured and take precautions."

Mexican traffickers often work as families and the son of a fellow Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael "Mayo" Zambada is currently fighting trafficking charges in Chicago as part of the same case.

Edgar Guzman, another son of Joaquin Guzman, was shot dead by gunmen in his home state of Sinaloa in 2008. Other sons Ivan Guzman and Ovidio Guzman have also been named as traffickers by the U.S. Treasury and Americans are banned from doing business with their companies.

Mexican marines have become an elite force in the military who have captured or shot dead several drug kingpins since 2009.

Jalisco state has been a stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel since the 1980s, when traffickers first started to use Mexico as a "trampoline" to bounce cocaine into the United States.

It has recently seen an upsurge in violence as Sinaloa Cartel gunmen battle rivals from the upstart Zetas cartel, which is displacing older trafficking groups in many parts of Mexico.

In May, 18 decapitated bodies and heads were left on a Jalisco road, adding to about 345 drug-related killings in the state since January.

In total there have been more than 55,000 drug-related murders since Calderon took office in December 2006 and began his crackdown on cartels, leading many to criticize his security strategy.

Late on Thursday, the PAN released a statement saying the arrest of Guzman vindicated President Calderon's tactics.

"The Calderon government's struggle to capture the main bosses of organized crime has been carried out with bravery and firmness," PAN leader Gustavo Madero said in the statement.

The candidate for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Enrique Pena Nieto, has a double-digit lead heading into the July 1 election according to most opinion polls.

Vegetarian Diet regime: Great for Weight Loss, Health and fitness As ...

?Animals are my mates and that i do not try to eat my friends? was how George Bernard Shaw defined his vegetarian diet plan. Albert Einstein explained the adoption of ?the vegetarian fashion of dwelling?would most beneficially impact the great deal of mankind.?

No matter whether you are interested in vegetarianism mainly because of lofty moral ideals such as people held by Shaw and Einstein, or mainly because you just need to shed weight and truly feel superior physically you?re not alone. Through the earth there?s a growing fascination in vegetarianism.

Let us check out the key reasons for currently being a vegetarian.

Physical: There is certainly an extended list of contemporary health conditions which might be aggravated by meat ingesting: colon most cancers, coronary disease, kidney disorder, arthritis and gout leading the list.

Mass grave found of rhinoceros-sized 'wombats'

The Australian Museum exhibits a reconstructed model of a "diprotodon", an ancient rhino-sized mega-wombat on Thursday.

A mass grave of prehistoric ?giant wombats? ? a marsupial the size of a rhinoceros ? has been discovered in Australia, according to reports.

The discovery of about 50 diprotodon skeletons was the biggest to date and could shed light on why the animal become extinct, BBC News reported.

Diprotodon, a relative of the modern wombat, was the largest marsupial that ever lived and had a pouch that was large enough to carry an adult human.

According to the Australian Museum, it was ?widespread across Australia when the first indigenous people arrived, co-existing with them for thousands of years before becoming extinct about 25,000 years ago.? Fortunately for the people, diprotodon ate plants.

?Exact reasons for the extinction of Diprotodon remain unclear. It seems to have co-existed with Aboriginal people for over 20,000 years, so the 'blitzkrieg' model (extinction upon the arrival of humans) does not hold for Diprotodon,? according to a post on the Museum?s website.

?Human activity may have had an effect, either through habitat change ('firestick farming') or perhaps via a slow decrease in numbers through selected hunting of juveniles. Aboriginal people did not have 'big game' weapons, and most likely did not target adult Diprotodon,? it says.

?Climate change may have also been a significant factor. During the Pleistocene, Australia experienced droughts that were much worse than today's, and much of inland Australia was barren, inhospitable and waterless,? it adds.

'Blown away'
The fossils were discovered at the South Walker Creek mine site??in central Queensland by the Barada Barna people, according to the Queensland Museum, where the lead scientist on the project, Scott Hocknull, is based.

"When we did the initial survey I was just completely blown away by the concentrations of these fragments,? Hocknull told BBC News.

"It's a paleontologists' goldmine where we can really see what these megafauna were doing, how they actually behaved, what their ecology was,? he added. "With so many fossils it gives us a unique opportunity to see these animals in their environment, basically, so we can reconstruct it."

He said it was thought the animals died after they became trapped in a bog.?The remains of other species, such as 20-foot lizards called megalania and giant crocodiles, were also found at the site.

"We're almost certain that most of these carcasses of diprotodon have been torn apart by both the crocodiles and the lizards, because we've found shed teeth within their skeletons from both animals,? Hocknull told the BBC.
