You may not recognize the name Liam McLoughlin, but you?re probably familiar with the work he does under his handle. Hexxeh has been compiling and sharing builds of Chromium OS for almost two years, tweaking the Chrome OS open source sibling with Flash and Java support ?? and even building in automatic updates. He figured out how to get Chromium OS running on the Macbook Air and now he?s got his sights set on another device: the Raspberry Pi.
With support for ARM processors already part of the Chrome OS core, it?s no surprise that the geek-favorite $35 computer was on someone?s radar. Hexxeh?s actually been plugging away since mid-April, and his work is now solid enough that it has landed in the official Chromium source code as a hardware overlay.
The dirt-cheap Pi is an ideal platform for the browser-only OS. While Google is pitching official Chrome OS hardware at institutions of learning, the Pi/Chromium OS combo is an even better fit for schools where IT budgets are tight.?Its hardware isn?t as powerful as what you?d get in the Samsung Chromebox, but it?s still more than capable of handling web apps and browsing duties ? and it?s still easy to secure, manage, and maintain.
Add in the fact that you can purchase nearly ten times the number of Raspberry Pi machines for the same price as a single Chromebox, and it?s easy to see how even Google could be very excited about this development. With Hexxeh?s code and greater availability of low-cost, capable hardware, Chrome OS could be primed for a major assault on savings-hungry businesses and organizations around the world.
