Romney makes Mormonism part of his big night

After years of avoiding direct mention of his religion, Mitt Romney will open up about his Mormon faith as he accepts the Republican nomination for president.

The former Massachusetts governor is the first Mormon presidential candidate on a major party ticket. It's unclear just how much detail he will provide on Thursday night, the pinnacle of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. He has spoken broadly in the past about the importance of prayer and belief in God, but has not discussed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

However, the roster of speakers promises at least a glimpse into his nearly 14 years of service as a lay Mormon pastor around Boston. The invocation will be given by Ken Hutchins, a retired Northborough, Mass., police chief, who was also a Mormon leader in the state, and Grant Bennett, who served as a church counselor to Romney, is scheduled to offer remarks.

"I think this is a speech where he's going to talk a lot about what's informed his values, what's informed his outlook. Of course his faith is an important part of that," Romney aide Kevin Madden said in Tampa this week. "It's an important part of who he is as a husband and a father. And so I think you can expect some of that."

Starting in the 1980s, Romney was a bishop in the Boston suburb of Belmont, a job akin to the pastor of a congregation. He then served as a stake president, the top Mormon authority in his region, which meant he presided over several congregations in a district similar to a diocese.

He counseled Latter-day Saints on their most personal concerns, regarding marriage, parenting, finances and faith. He worked with immigrant converts from Haiti, Cambodia and other countries. Bennett has in the past described how Romney built relationships with other religious groups around his Belmont, Mass., hometown, after a suspicious fire in 1984 destroyed a new Mormon meeting house there.

Other convention speakers have already laid a foundation for this new faith emphasis. In his acceptance speech Wednesday night, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, a Roman Catholic, said "our different faiths come together in the same moral creed." Ann Romney, in a speech meant to show a more personal side of her husband, describing the early challenges they faced as a couple, including religious differences. "I was Episcopalian. He was a Mormon," she said. The reference was striking given that the Romneys almost never use the word Mormon on the campaign trail.

Republican evangelicals have been playing down conflict with Latter-day Saints. Most prominently, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, speaking from the podium Wednesday night, said, "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church, than I do about where he takes this country." Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor before he entered politics, had publicly questioned Mormon beliefs when he was competing against Romney in the 2008 presidential primary. Most Christians don't consider Latter-day Saints part of traditional Christianity, although Mormons do.

Romney has struggled to navigate as a religious minority seeking the nation's highest office.

Since Mormons generally live in concentrated communities in the Mountain West and California, few Americans have met a Latter-day Saint. Most Mormons said they were stunned by the open expression of prejudice against their church during Romney's first bid for the White House.

In his 2008 campaign, Romney openly courted evangelicals, who make up about a quarter of the electorate and are a critical part of the Republican base. He stressed the beliefs he shared with Christian conservatives about Christ and the Bible, and he promised he would not be influenced on policy by the leaders of the LDS church. This year, he has done little public outreach with Protestant conservatives and, until now, has largely separated his Mormonism from his campaign.

"He's trying to find the right register, and those around him who advise him are trying to find the right register. Now, it seems, the push is to make him look human, that means emphasizing the admittedly wonderful things he has done in the church to help people," said Laurie Maffly-Kipp, a religion scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who writes frequently about the LDS church. "The trick is to do that without bringing up the parts of Mormonism that might sound odd to others."

A Gallup poll in June found that voter bias against Mormons has barely budged for decades. In the survey, 18 percent of Americans said they would not vote for a well-qualified presidential candidate who happens to be a Mormon, compared to 17% who said so in 1967, when Romney's father George had been seeking the Republican nomination.

However, the campaign clearly felt more confident discussing the LDS Church since Romney sealed the nomination.

Polls indicate that Republican voters are willing to set aside their concerns about the LDS church to oust President Barack Obama. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that a majority of people who know that Romney is Mormon are comfortable with his religion or don't consider it a concern. In the days leading up to the convention, Romney told interviewers he prays daily and discussed the doubts he experienced about his religion when he, like most young Mormon men, fulfilled his church duty to serve as a missionary. Romney served in overwhelmingly Catholic France during the 1960s, and faced hostility as an American and a Mormon.

"I don't think underlying attitudes have changed," said John Green, director of the University of Akron's Bliss Institute for Applied Politics. "I don't think evangelicals are any less skeptical about Mormons, but an election is a choice and Republicans have something to work with here because of the unpopularity of Obama among this group of evangelicals."

Nokia and JBL's PlayUp NFC-equipped Bluetooth speaker wants to pair up with your Lumia

Nokia and JBL's PlayUp NFCequipped Bluetooth speaker wants to pair up with your Lumia

Nokia may have partnered with Monster for its last batch of Lumia-focused audio wares, but now JBL is also in on the deal. Say hello to first product from Nokia and JBL, the successor to the Play 360 portable speaker, dubbed PlayUp. The noiseybox is packed with Bluetooth and NFC, and as for the design, it's made to complement "current and future Lumia smartphones." Like the Play 360, the PlayUp is a cylindrical, top-shooting speaker with physical volume controls, a large power button near the bottom and a 3.5mm jack for plugging in PMPs. The PlayUp weighs 760g and it measures in at 118 x 118 x 128mm -- a fair bit chunkier that the 360 (110 x 110 x 124mm and 514g). Despite the heft, the PlayUp's battery is rated for 10 hours of use, which is disappointingly just under half of the 360's replaceable cell. Charging gets handled via micro-USB and -- thankfully -- a wall adapter is included.

Naturally, the notable change is JBL's baked-in audio expertise. The unit can pump out a healthy 89dB of volume (aided by a bass port), which isn't shabby, but still shy of the ear-ringing 120dB the $99 UE Mobile BoomBox can produce. There's no word on whether tow units can pair wireless stereo like its elder, or what version of Bluetooth is packed inside, but we'll be sure to let you know once we find out. Nokia also plans to release an app for the device to allow for remote control.

Given that Nokia has knack for consistency across its products, it's likely that the white, black, cyan and bright yellow color choices will match up with the WP 8-loaded Lumias at their September 5th unveiling. The PlayUp will be available for €149 (about $186) before the year is out, which includes a travel pouch and a 3.5mm audio cable. In the meantime, hit the source link for more details.

New Orleans mayor says levees, pumps withstood Isaac

Published August 30, 2012

Associated Press

New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu says he hopes the worst for the city is behind it a day after Isaac's winds and rain came through.

At a Thursday news conference, Landrieu said the city's levees and pumps have held up as Isaac stormed through, seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew was issued for the city Wednesday and Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas says three people were arrested and three others were issued court summonses for curfew violations. Landrieu says the city will decide later Thursday whether to keep the curfew in place.

Serpas also said police have responded to 16 "looting events," 13 of which resulted in arrests.

LiftPort Wants To Build Space Elevator On the Moon By 2020

They're forgetting the single most important part of a space elevator: It needs to actually be useful.

What are we going to do with a space elevator on the moon? We don't go there for a very good reason: Its expensive as hell. Making the cheap and easy part a little cheaper an easier isn't going to change the fact that the entire rest of the trip is prohibitively expensive.

It's like your friend moving across town to be closer to you, but he lives in Seattle and you live in London.

Barclays faces SFO probe on Qatar payments

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's fraud prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into payments between Barclays and Qatar Holding, the British bank confirmed, adding to an ongoing regulatory investigation into dealings between the two parties.

Barclays said on Wednesday that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) started an investigation into "payments under certain commercial agreements" between it and Qatar, confirming an earlier report.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA), Britain's financial watchdog, is already investigating the bank and four current and former senior employees, including finance director Chris Lucas, on whether sufficient disclosures were made about the fees it paid in a 2008 capital raising.

Barclays disclosed the FSA investigation when it released half-year results on July 27. It relates to fees paid to the Qatar Investment Authority on deals in June and November 2008, when Barclays raised 11.5 billion pounds.

The SFO probe differs as it is examining the bank, rather than the bank plus four individuals.

The bank did not reveal which payments between it and Qatar were being investigated by the SFO, although the FSA is expected to share information with the SFO that it has obtained, and both are expected to ask for further information from the bank.

Qatar Holding, the entity involved in the investigation, is a unit of the Qatar Investment Authority, which is the largest shareholder in Barclays with a 6.65 percent stake, according to Reuters data.

The bank is reeling after being fined 290 million pounds by British and U.S. regulators in June for rigging Libor interest rates, sparking criticism about its culture and risk-taking and forcing its chairman and chief executive to quit.

Barclays said on Wednesday management consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group was to support a review into its business practices that is being led by Antony Salz.

Former Deloitte partner Russell Collins was also named as Salz's deputy. The independent report is due by April.

Dropbox Adds Two-Step Verification for Enhanced Security, And You Should Turn It On NowMost security-minded computer users know about Google's two-step verification process, but other popular webapps like Facebook and Amazon have also added this great way of reducing your chances of being hacked. Today, Dropbox joins the two-step verification party .

To enable Dropbox two-step authentication you'll need to allow Dropbox to send you a text message with a code or use a mobile authenticator app if you don't want Dropbox to have your phone number. Either way works fine and enables the "something you have" plus "something you know" steps to help keep you safe.

To get started go to your account settings page on Dropbox, click on the Security tab, and scroll down to the bottom of the page and enable two-step verification. Or just click this link.

Police quell protest over Indian coal scandal

Hundreds of Indian protesters angry at a controversial allocation of coal fields were baton charged by police and sprayed with tear gas during a demonstration in the capital New Delhi Sunday.

Police also fired water cannons to disperse the protesters as they tried to march towards the residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Singh has been a target for the demonstrators following a recent report by the state auditor which said private companies had made "windfall gains" since 2004 after being given coal mining rights via a process that "lacked transparency".

The prime minister, whose reputation has been sullied by a string of scandals during his administration, was in charge of the coal ministry from 2004 to 2009 and has been personally implicated in the mismanagement.

The government has said its efforts to introduce open bidding for coal resources were held up by protests from some state governments, notably the ones run by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

"We wanted to tell the country how the Congress and the opposition are hand in glove in this coal scandal," Arvind Kejriwal, an aide of popular anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, told his supporters at the protest venue.

"We are ready to take blows from the police. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the sake of our country," added Kejriwal, whose movement goes under the name of "India Against Corruption".

Police said they resorted to force as the protesters were turning unruly and had broken down the barricades.

"We could not have allowed the protestors to move forward. Rules prohibit any kind of protest in security sensitive areas like the residence of the prime minister," a police officer at the scene told AFP.

Kejriwal, who was detained briefly by police, claimed the protest had been successful and criticised the use of force on his supporters.

"We were only holding a peaceful protest. It seems the police were acting on the orders of Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi. The real face of this government has been exposed," he said.

Hazare, who was not part of Sunday's protest, last month announced his support for Kejriwal and his party which is set to contest the general elections in 2014.

Frugal Traveler Seth Kugel: How To Book Hotel Stays - Business ...

When we sat down to chat with New York Times' Frugal Traveler, Seth Kugel, this week, it was clear he had a lot to say on one of his largest expenses: hotel stays.

Though he's typically tasked with finding frugal ways to explore far-off destinations, Kugel says it takes a lot more work than plucking a $5/night hostel out of a guidebook.

"My general feeling is, if you're a traveler who wants to stay in a hostel, you don't need my help," he says, "It's boring to stay in hostels. What I want to do is find a place for readers that's relatively cheap but might be hard to find, like a $16/night place in Bolivia or how to try stuff like Couch Surfing or AirBnB."

Kugel's already shared the?simple way he finds hotels when websites fail him. We asked him for a few other pointers on booking lodging:?

Follow your tongue: "I find there is huge difference in [getting discounts] in a place where you speak the language and a place where you don't. If I spoke fluent Mandarin, I'd be all over China all the time. ?If you are going to call [to book a hotel], have a friend who speaks the language call for you. Being a native speaker and chatting up the person, they're much more likely to get a discount."

Use the "one-week" tactic: "Longer stays mean more negotiating power with hotels and bed and breakfasts??pretty much anything that's not an international chain. I see this happening again and again. You can almost always bargain with hotels and the number one way is to say 'I want to stay a week. What kind of discount can you give me?' It may not work in every single destination, but small businesses want to fill their space, even in the U.S."

Learn to walk the walk.?"It's nice to have a place booked for the day you arrive, but there's a lot to be said for spending a few hours on your first day checking out various spots. You're much more likely to get a discount when you go in person than when you book by email or phone because you're there. When you walk in, ask if you can see one of their rooms and then walk out ?to check out another place. [You'll find] the price sometimes comes down as you're walking off."

Learn how to bid. "If you're ever staying in a [major] chain hotel anywhere in the U.S. and you're not bidding on Priceline, you're basically losing money.?It's an investment learning how to bid on Priceline, but it's very much worth it. Once you learn how to do it, it's a huge money saver, especially in the U.S. "

Follow familiar faces. "I'm definitely in favor of choosing destinations in favor of where you know people. It could be lodging or it could be connections, but having a local friend could change your experience entirely. [While in Norway recently] I spent a whole week where a friend of a friend was having a party and it made a huge difference in enjoying the place. I had a couple nights with a free place but more importantly, I got to hang out with a couple Norwegians. I would certainly give up the number one place I want to go if I had a personal connection [somewhere else]."

Skip hostels. "The hostel route is generally used by travelers under 30, which I'm not. This is a great way to travel and it's a lot of fun to meet people, but it's neither the way the Frugal Traveler likes to travel nor the particular way that I like to travel. With one exception: If the place has outrageously priced lodging, I will absolutely go with a hostel."?

You can follow all Kugel's travels via Twitter.

Problem MHC on Block - MH Marketing Sales Management

Harking back to a story we have been following since Sept. 2011 and that we last covered July 13, 2012, Edgeway Mobile Home Park in Middleboro, Massachusetts has been under a cloud of violations, court judgments, and missed deadlines since it first opened in the 1990?s, and now, since original developer Wayne Williams? death six years ago, his estate has been placed under an administrator who says there are still not enough resources to replace the septic system or complete the drainage and road construction. southcoasttoday says attorney James Burke reports rental income from the residents barely covers routine maintenance and he intends to sell the MHC ?as is,? a plan that the town selectmen reject, saying the estate should at least pay to replace the septic system. While such an upgrade would indeed help sell the property, Mr. Burke says the finances simply do not support that. Selectman Ben Quelle, noting the septic issue is tied to health codes, says, ?These tenants are hanging by a thread. They?re asking themselves whether they legally need to pay the rent at this point. I sympathize with them. These issues have been going on for a long time and they haven?t been addressed.? MHProNews has learned Mr. Burke has contacted several national MHC developers and hopes to have the property sold within six months.

Wind concentrates pollutants with unexpected order in an urban environment

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Cities -- with their concrete canyons, isolated greenery, and congested traffic -- create seemingly chaotic and often powerful wind patterns known as urban flows. Carried on these winds are a variety of environmental hazards, including exhaust particles, diesel fumes, chemical residues, ozone, and the simple dust and dander produced by dense populations.

In a paper published in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Physics of Fluids, researchers present the unexpected finding that pollutant particles, rather than scattering randomly, prefer to accumulate in specific regions of the urban environment and even form coherent structures. "The unexpected finding is coherent patterns in fluid flows were thought to have no real analog in nature," said Wenbo Tang of Arizona State University in Tempe. "In previous studies, the existence of these patterns in fluid flows was only verified with idealized 'theoretical' flows. It was not known if such structures were robust enough to manifest in the environment."

The researchers were able to verify this by using a new mathematical formula, the first of its kind, to simulate the long-term random motion of pollutant particles as would be found in the real world. These more realistic simulations revealed that coherent patterns emerged from the random motions of particles carried along by the urban flow. The results can be used to generate maps of well and poorly mixed regions and highlight urban areas that are most susceptible to high concentrations of pollutants, indicating locations that should be avoided or remedied.

According to the researchers, the modeling capabilities developed in this project directly benefit decision makers addressing issues related to urban pollution, human comfort, and the effects of climate change on urban areas. The research also aims to understand the interconnection of urban flows with the regional and global atmosphere.

Edwards, Ford teams discuss look of 2013 NASCAR Fusion in video

Published on August 24, 2012

NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards, his crew chief Chad Norris and Wood Brothers owners Len and Eddie Wood weighed in on the new 2013 NASCAR Ford Fusion during a test session at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va., on Aug. 7.

The test session was the first since NASCAR approved the 2013 models for competition.

?This is the first time I?ve driven the 2013 NASCAR Fusion, and it?s great,? Edwards said. ?Ford has done a great job with us, and at the end of the day we like fast cars and we like neat cars. That?s why I started racing, and that?s why all of these guys enjoy the sport so much, so it?s really cool to walk in the garage and see such a beautiful Ford race car sitting there.?

While Edwards was turning laps around the half-mile oval, many observers said that the new racing Fusion brought back memories from past decades when race cars had a distinct look.

?I really like it because it looks like the Fusion that?s going to be in the showroom,? said Eddie Wood, co-owner of the No. 21 Motorcraft Fusion and lifelong NASCAR competitor. ?The biggest thing I like about it is it reminds me of the ?69 Cyclones and Torinos and Talladegas with the Cyclone spoilers we ran in the late ?60s. It?s got the fastback roof and all that, so I?m looking forward to painting ours red and white.

?It?s a modern look, but it?s kind of got a throwback style,? Wood continued. ?I think it?s got everything. I think it?s got appeal for the young people that are of age to buy cars, and I think it?s got the appeal of guys my age that have been around a while. I wish we could run it now.?

His brother, Len, felt much the same way saying, ?I think it looks like the cars we used to race, the old Mercurys and Torinos and things we had back in the ?70s. I?m really pleased with it because it looks like a street car. I haven?t seen a grille like that in years on a race car. I think it looks great.?

IAEA to press Iran for access, West suspects site "clean-up"

VIENNA (Reuters) - U.N. nuclear inspectors will press again for access to a major military facility in talks with Iran this week but the chances of finding any evidence of suspected atom bomb research may have dimmed because the site has been "cleaned up", Western diplomats and experts say.

Visiting the Parchin complex has become a priority for the International Atomic Energy Agency as it seeks to end what the West sees as prolonged Iranian stonewalling of its investigation into allegations of attempts to design a nuclear weapon.

Iran denies accusations that it wants to develop nuclear weapon technology. But its refusal to limit and be more transparent about its nuclear activity has led to increasingly tough sanctions and sparked renewed speculation that Israel, Tehran's arch-enemy, might bomb Iranian nuclear installations.

Citing satellite images, Western diplomats say Iran has demolished some small buildings and moved earth at Parchin in an apparent attempt to purge any incriminating evidence from a site where the IAEA believe tests in a steel chamber relevant to nuclear arms were carried out, possibly a decade ago.

"I have heard that there is currently a lot of clean-up going on at Parchin," one envoy said, who like other diplomats said such work was only spotted after the IAEA mentioned Parchin in a detailed report late last year.

Another diplomat accredited to the IAEA said he believed Iran would not allow access to the facility "unless they are extremely confident that there will be nothing found".

Iran says Parchin, about 30 km (20 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran, is a conventional military site and has dismissed allegations aired about it as "ridiculous".

But the IAEA is likely to express deepening concern about suspected whitewashing efforts at Parchin in its upcoming quarterly report on Iran's nuclear program, due next week, and how they may hamper its inquiry, the diplomats say.

A U.S. think-tank, the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), said this month that satellite imagery from Parchin showed "what appears to be the final result of considerable sanitization and earth-displacement activity".

URANIUM PARTICLES?

Talks between senior IAEA and Iranian officials scheduled for Friday in Vienna could offer a last-minute chance for Tehran to influence the content of the report if it were to offer concessions regarding access to sites, documents and officials.

The IAEA report - expected to reiterate that Tehran is pressing ahead with its uranium enrichment program - will be submitted to the agency's 35-nation governing board, which meets on September 10-14 with Iran likely to again dominate the agenda.

This week's meeting between the IAEA and Iran will be their first since talks in early June ended in failure, with Iran setting conditions for how the inquiry should be conducted that were unacceptable for the U.N. watchdog.

The IAEA said the two sides would hold "further discussions on a structured approach to resolve outstanding issues relating to Iran's nuclear program," referring to suspicions of possible military dimensions to Tehran's atomic activities.

No details were given. But the IAEA made clear in earlier rounds of talks this year that its immediate request is to go to Parchin. Iran says it must first agree a framework for the IAEA's inquiry before possibly allowing access to the facility - a stance dismissed by Western diplomats as delaying tactics.

It is unclear whether Iran will give any ground over Parchin at Friday's meeting at its diplomatic mission in Vienna.

Even if it did allow U.N. inspectors to visit, they would probably uncover no hard evidence of nuclear weapons-related work, according to nuclear proliferation expert Mark Fitzpatrick at the International Institute for Strategic Studies think-tank.

"The clean-up probably could not totally remove uranium particles, but they wouldn't be enriched and Iran would be able to offer exculpatory explanations," Fitzpatrick told Reuters.

Rebuilding: sorry to burst your bubble ... | Otago Daily Times Online ...

Work under way in Christchurch. Photo by Linda Robertson.

Work under way in Christchurch. Photo by Linda Robertson.

Is the rebuilding of Christchurch really a bonanza for our economy? Peter Lyons asks.

We seem to be deluding ourselves that the rebuilding of Christchurch after the earthquakes will be a bonanza for our economy.

There are frequent references to "the stimulus to our economy" of rebuilding Christchurch as though this provides a path to future sustainable growth. The same logic suggests floods, wars, tsunamis and other major destructive events are a boon to an economy. This is nonsense.

The nonsense relates to the confusion between wealth and income. The Christchurch earthquake was hugely destructive to the wealth of New Zealand as a society. Apart from the tragic loss of life, there was also the destruction of businesses, homes and physical infrastructure on a massive scale. To suggest that the rebuilding provides a bonanza for our economy implies that a builder who rebuilds his house after a fire is somehow wealthier as a result of the process.

The rebuilding of Christchurch will provide a stimulus for our economy but that is because we have been languishing at, or near, recession since 2007. Some workers and machinery that would otherwise be idle could be employed in the rebuilding. This increase in employment should lead to increased incomes, leading to further demand in the economy and more jobs and output but this is only if these resources are currently unemployed.

Economists call this stimulus the multiplier effect. From a purely economic perspective, we are slightly fortunate that this tragic disaster happened during an economic downturn, when some resources are available.

To suggest that the rebuilding is a bonanza for our economy is ridiculous.

If that was the case, we could grow our economy by burning down large parts of Dunedin on a regular basis, then employing people and machinery to rebuild it. I can't think of any society that has achieved economic prosperity through such a strategy.

The Christchurch earthquake has reduced the wealth of our country but could lead to a stimulus to employment and incomes during a difficult time.

The rebuilding process will create jobs and incomes and output which will increase New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP). Successful rebuilding may allow us to regain the wealth that was lost by this disaster. It is not a recipe for increasing national prosperity.

From a purely economic point of view, the resources tied up in the rebuilding will cost the rest of the economy dearly. Parts of the Auckland property market are currently experiencing a mini price boom.

Some of this is likely due to the internal migration caused by the earthquake as a number of Christchurch residents relocate to Auckland. Migration has a huge effect on house prices, because the supply of new houses is so slow to respond to increased demand. The builders and materials tied up in the rebuilding mean there will be less building activity in other parts of the country.

This is likely to drive up the cost of housing construction, because of resource constraints.

The rebuilding of Christchurch does offer opportunities for our national development. If housing construction can be made more cost-effective due to economies of scale and streamlined consent requirements during the rebuilding, these efficiencies could be applied to new housing developments in other parts of the country. A recent report by the Productivity Commission showed the excessive costs of new housing relate partially to the costly consent processes and the lack of economics of scale in the construction industry.

The father of modern economics, Adam Smith, pointed out that a nation's prosperity depended on its production of saleable goods and services. This is measured in a system of national income accounting that produces figures for gross domestic product. The rebuilding will stimulate our GDP. It will create more jobs and output and incomes in our economy.

But this process is not creating new wealth for our society. It is attempting to regain the assets that were lost in this disaster.

The fact that we have some spare capacity to do this is because our economy has been in the doldrums for several years. Unfortunately, the labour required for the rebuilding is generally skilled and this reduces its availability for use in other parts of the economy.

If the Government is astute in how it manages the rebuilding, then some good could come out of it in new skills training, better construction techniques and streamlined consent processes. If this doesn't occur then the disaster has been compounded.

? Peter Lyons teaches economics at St Peter's College in Epsom.

What Data Recovery in Minnetonka, MN, Can Do for You Submit ...

Many people store information on their computers that is important to them. Businesses often run their business completely on the computer, keeping files electronically. Individuals often use computers to store financial information, pictures and other important pieces of information in their lives. However, things can happen to computers, such as crashes and viruses, which can seemingly delete this important data from the hard drive. Therefore, it is important to know how data recovery in Minnetonka, MN, can help you.

If you ever encounter a situation where all of the important data on your computer seems to be gone, you can try to get it back on your own. You may complete searches of the hard drive in hopes of locating the files yourself. However, they may truly be gone, or at least appear to be. Even if you can pull up the actual file by name, it may no longer contain what it should, which will leave you wishing you had made a backup of the files instead.

Those who are unable to retrieve the missing data on their own will need a company that provides data recovery in Minnetonka, MN. When you delete things from your hard drive, they don?t typically go away completely. You have probably heard of law enforcement personnel who have confiscated a criminal?s computer to search for evidence. Even if the criminal deleted the data from his hard drive, the police are often able to find it. Data recovery services work in the same way to help you get your pictures and important files back.

One thing you should always do in terms of data recovery is to create a backup of your computer system. Any time you put important files on your computer, you should copy them to an external hard drive or a disk to ensure you have a backup. In some cases, you may be able to put these documents and files on a secure server, often called a cloud. This will allow you to store the information remotely so you can access it from another computer if something happens to yours.

No one wants to think about needing data recovery in Minnetonka, MN, but it does happen far more often than it should. If you accidentally download a virus, your computer crashes or you inadvertently delete a file, it isn?t necessarily gone forever. A good computer service will be able to get it back for you. However, it is important to create your own backups just in case.

Green Miami ? Miami Real Estate

The Greater Miami and the Beaches is primed to be a forerunner in protecting the environment, given that it is the only US metropolis between two nature preserves: the Everglades National Park to the west and Biscayne National Park to the east. Along with the state?s tourism community and local governments, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) acknowledges the significance of implementing environmental initiatives to maintain the natural beauty of the region.

Stay Green thru Accommodations

Efforts to conserve water are heavily promoted in Miami?s hotel and restaurants. For instance, these establishments and their potential customers are advised to reuse bed linens and towels and not have them replaced on a daily basis.

By means of the Florida Green Lodging Program, deserving hotels are awarded a Green Lodging designation for complying with environmental practices in areas such as transportation, air and water quality, energy efficiency, and others.

Play Green thru Parks, Recreation & Beaches

Greater Miami protects natural reefs with the Miami-Dade County Artificial Reef Program. Artificial habitats for marine life such as decommissioned ships and army tanks are dropped into the ocean, giving divers and recreational fishermen a destination while letting natural reefs to flourish.

People who prefer to spend time at the beach can enjoy a jogging path lined with native plants. To preserve cleanliness, the local government encourages communities to participate in beach cleanups.

The City of Miami Beach is also home to three species of sea turtles. To aid hatchlings out to sea, officials made the Turtle Nesting Protection Ordinance to control lighting in private and public lands.

Go Green thru Transportation

Greenhouse emissions are diminished by encouraging visitors to walk, bike, or use public transportation towards their destination.

When choosing public transportation, the Miami-Dade Transit provides Metrobus, Metrorail, and Metromover systems for easy access throughout Miami-Dade County. Eventually, hybrid electric buses that feed on biodiesel, complemented by solar-powered bus shelters, will replace existing vehicles.

Miles of bike lanes continue to be added every year, allowing a safer alternative of transportation. By swiping a credit card at kiosks conveniently placed all over the city, anyone can rent a bicycle. The bikes can be even brought on buses and trains.

Since most of Greater Miami?s visitors arrive at Miami International Airport, campaigns to raise environmental awareness begin there. A variety of tips from water conservation to reducing energy consumption are offered.

Govern Green thru Local Government Efforts

The City of Miami Beach formed the Sustainability (Green) Committee in 2009 to determine and advance practices that contribute to reaching a sustainable environment. The plan details factors such as green building, alternative transportation, and others.

On the other hand, the Miami-Dade County set up the Office of Sustainability in 2008 for a similar purpose.

GMCVN Efforts

The not-for-profit organization itself has carried out its own practices to be environmentally friendly. For example, its data management system called Destination 3000 gradually lets the organization become completely ?paperless,? with e-zine versions replacing the traditional printed destination guides.

As the forefront in promoting people to visit the Greater Miami and its Beaches, the organization is devoted to touting the recent efforts made by the community in keeping their home a friend to the environment.

All About Hard Drive Recovery

How many times have you been told if you do not back up your computer, eventually you will be faced with an emergency? The good news is there is a way to perform hard drive recovery. This can save your files and most of what is on your computer and you will have learned your lesson. A data hard drive recovery is hard work and can be very expensive. The first thing you should do is make sure the problem is what you think it is. There are a number of things that can go wrong, so you want to be sure you are fixing the appropriate thing. You can test the current problem by hooking up the computer to an external computer. This will tell you if what you think has crashed really are the problem. To do this you might need a USB adapter, but these are relatively inexpensive, especially compared to a whole new computer.

If your files do not appear once you have hooked up to another computer, you likely have serious damage. An attempt to save the lost materials can cost hundreds of dollars or more. The process can take a long period of time and you might still be left with a number of missing files. However, sometimes the process saves the files and everything can be restored. The same computer forensics procedures used to restore things people thought were deleted is used to restore materials that are unintentionally deleted.

There are two ways your computer can crash. One is a mechanical failure and the other is a logical failure. When the failure is logical, the components of the computer are not damaged. It usually occurs because of a corrupt file system or a formatting error that is accidental. This leaves the computer unable to navigate its own data. Without an overwriting procedure, you should still be able to recover anything stored on the computer.

When the failure is mechanical, this means the computer is actually broken. You might hear a clicking sound, which means the files might still be there, but you have a long road ahead of you. The process could cost you up to $2500 to fix and restore your information and materials. Obviously, computer users should hope for a logical failure because it is much easier to fix. However, there are solutions to both problems, especially if you know who to contact for help.

Once everything is restored, if restoration is possible, make sure you begin backing up your work. In the future, you will be able to rebuild your system fairly quickly. You can wipe out the problem, fix it, and put the materials back onto your machine. You might lose a few things depending on how long it is between the times you back up, but the majority of your files will be kept up to date and restoration will be a fairly simple process. It usually only takes one crash for someone to realize they need to start backing up their computers.Ellie Lewis is writing an article on hard drive recovery . She is interested in data hard drive recovery and the cost of such services.

Funium's Family Village game brings your family history into a social ...

Funium?s Family Village game is one more new city-building game on Facebook. Against Zynga?s CityVille and Electronic Arts? SimCity Social, a small company like Funium might seem like a nonstarter. But its unique twist on family history and unusual method for keeping players engaged just might prove addictive for users. Funium?s founder, John Wells, hopes that the game will bring some disruptive innovation to the social game genre that has become stale lately.

In Family Village, you create characters, build a town, and then populate it with more people. But the twist is that those people are actually members of your own family tree. If you play enough, Funium will reward you with information about your ancestors that it has dug up through its own research into genealogical data. You can then decorate the ?family museums? of your characters and invite friends to view them. The more you find out about your ancestors through historical documents, the more you want to build out your own virtual community.

?This is a social game with real-world value,? said Wells, the chief executive of Funium, in an interview with GamesBeat. ?We hope it will be disruptive in the industry. We think we have the secret sauce to make the game last longer and become more fun and exciting in the process. It?s like we are gamifying genealogy. ?

funium 2Family Village is the brainchild of Wells, a ?product enhancement specialist? in Provo, Utah. His job is to figure out how to enhance the value or usage of a product, like when he got people to use their American Express cards more by forming deals with insurance companies that give bonus rewards for using American Express.

?I love family history, and I spend hours doing it at night,? said Wells. ?It is a grueling process, but it is thrilling. I thought we could make it into a game.?

The game has been in beta testing since April 2011, and it has more than 30,000 users, despite no advertising. The online community that you create can be set in a time such as the 1800s, when your ancestors lived. You can set them up in the clothes of the era and personalize the avatars so they actually look like your ancestors. You can create multiple villages across different time periods, collaborate on a family tree with other family members or friends, and access more historical documents via search.

The business model is novel. Rather than buying traditional virtual goods in the free-to-play game, you purchase historical documents for 50 cents or a dollar.

Users can also upload their own family documents and pictures or write fun stories about family members. The breadth of tasks explains why an average single-session playtime is 14 minutes, or triple the industry average. The game becomes more valuable to the player over time because of the increased chance of discovering new family history research and unknown family members.

The game will likely have appeal in Europe and China, where family history research is a popular cultural interest. But it may not be as useful in countries where documents have not been translated into English or kept at all, Wells acknowledged.

Wells said his founding team shares deep history in genealogy, having been involved in the Ancestry.com, GeneTree, and the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. In the game, players build businesses and houses and ?immigrate? family members into the community. They assign jobs based on the time period in which the family member lived. Then Family Village matches the data to real-world documents about the living users and their deceased family relatives. These sources include newspaper articles, census records, and other documents. The objective is to understand and protect your family legacy. You start with a seedling, and over time you grow your family tree.

?It creates connections and discussion between family members,? said Wells.

Jim Sorenson, the lead investor in Ancestry.com, met Wells about four years ago and introduced him to cofounder Paul Allen. Sorenson?s Family Odyssey firm and other angel investors put $3 million into Funium. The company was founded in 2010 and has under 50 employees.
