Is your business growing? Help is available

It?s an enviable spot to be in for many business owners ? the stage where you?re growing and you need to bring new staff on board. It?s an exciting opportunity and one you want to handle expertly.

Certain aspects of running a business can be more time-consuming than others. Issues that typically fall under the umbrella of human resources can demand a lot of time and energy. Looking for new staff, hiring and training are each complicated, multi-layered processes.

Thankfully, help for employers is available. The Workforce Skills Centre in Vaughan is a wonderful resource for local businesses. The Centre has a variety of services that focus on the needs of the employer and can help you run a more efficient, more productive and safer business.

Centre staff can help in five major areas: resource and information; job matching, placement and incentives; essential skills; job training and retention; and professional development.

Employers can post jobs on the Centre?s job board and web site. They can learn about occupational and training requirements. They can find the latest on human resource planning, recruitment tips and workplace training, as well as the most recent information from the government about employment standards and workplace safety.

Your business might even be eligible to receive hiring incentives for providing on-the-job training. This could include apprenticeship training, work experience opportunities and employability assessments for those who take part in trial placements. Please visit the Centre to find out if your business is eligible.

Employers can also learn about the federal government?s focus on essential skills. Staff can help you write job descriptions and postings. They can teach you how to compile hiring checklists, test for essential skills, brush up on your interview skills and assess candidates.

Ongoing support is also available in the form of coaching and follow-up. You can develop retention plans to keep your workforce strong and learn professional development strategies.

Programs and services at the Workforce Skills Centre are generously supported by Employment Ontario.
