Conservation Officer Report | Sports & Recreation | Twin Ports News

The Minnesota DNR provided this summary of last week's activities by Conservation Officers:

CO Randy Hanzal (Duluth) reports trappers, waterfowl, archery and grouse hunters were checked for law compliance during the week. Several injured deer calls were received and dealt with. Many hunters were seen out in the field repairing broken deer stands. Please be very careful when using these permanent stands as they tend to become unsafe very quickly being exposed to the wind and Minnesota weather elements. Several reports of baiting are now being investigated. Please note that if you are caught hunting over a baited area you will now automatically lose your hunting privileges for one year, including loss of firearm, in addition to any fines.

Water Resource Enforcement Officer Mike Scott (NE MN) checked waterfowl hunters in the Duluth area. Cold weather and snow pushed in waterfowl during the past week making hunter success high over the weekend. Enforcement action taken for no Federal waterfowl stamp. A new WCA restoration order was served and AIS efforts continued throughout the week. A call for numerous shots fired after dark near a residence in Carlton County was investigated.

Sgt. Keith Olson (Marine Unit) worked on watercraft maintenance items, checked small game hunters north of Duluth, and answered many calls regarding the upcoming firearms deer season. He also followed up on a complaint of a bowhunter hunting past legal hours. Kamloop shore anglers are still fishing in the Duluth area.

CO Matt Miller (Marine Unit) responded to usual questions and complaints that arise before deer season; trespass, baiting, access issues. Assistance was given to the Lake County Rescue Squad with the rescue of a hiker who fell from the lower Gooseberry Falls. A shining detail was worked and patrol watercraft winterized and stored for the season. Enforcement action taken for ATV and small game violations.

CO Troy Ter Meer (Marine Unit) worked commercial, waterfowl, big game, small game, ATV, boating, and AIS enforcement throughout the week. Also attended a meeting and assisted with an ATV class in Two Harbors. Enforcement action taken for commercial, and boating violations.
