JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel on Thursday handed over the remains of 91 Palestinian militants, including suicide bombers, to the West Bank government in an effort to induce President Mahmoud Abbas to renew peace talks.

All 91 were killed over the past decades while carrying out suicide bombings or other attacks on Israeli targets, Palestinian officials said. At least one of the attacks dated back to the 1970s.

The bodies had been buried in coffins in Israel and were dug up for the transfer. The Palestinian official in charge of Thursday's transfer, Salem Khileh, said Israeli officials handed over the remains to Palestinian liaisons in the Jordan Valley.

Eighty bodies were then transported to Ramallah, and 11 to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Near the crossing from Israel to Gaza, families held framed pictures of their dead sons as they awaited the bodies. Ahmad Kahlout's 21-year-old son Yehiya was killed 17 years ago after he raided an Israeli settlement.

"I am happy they are sending back his body so I can go and pray on his grave before I die," said Kahlout, 78. "Until my dying day I will be proud of him, but also sad for the years I wasn't able to visit his grave."

Palestinian government ceremonies honoring the dead militants were to be held in the West Bank and Gaza later Thursday.

"We hope that this humanitarian gesture will serve both as a confidence-building measure and help get the peace process back on track," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said.

"Israel is ready for the immediate resumption of peace talks without any preconditions whatsoever," Regev added.

Abbas has given no sign that the gesture would persuade him to return to talks.

On Wednesday, he reiterated that the Palestinians would not return to negotiations unless Israel freezes all settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Palestinians see those areas, captured by Israel in 1967, as the core of a future state that would also include Gaza.

Israel rejects that demand. Israeli-Palestinian talks stalled more than three years ago and have failed to take off again despite U.S. mediation, primarily because of the dispute over settlement construction.

Upon hearing that this eponymous debut from Storm Corrosion is a collaboration between Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt and Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson, you might be tempted to imagine that this will sound like some kind of combination of the two bands. It doesn't. It doesn't sound like anything PT or Opeth have ever done; it doesn't sound like Heritage and it doesn't even sound like Grace For Drowning, despite being the third part of the unofficial trilogy made up by those two albums and this one.

That said, in my opinion it's the best of them. This is the kind of album that takes the listener on a voyage, that you just want to put on a nice stereo system and close your eyes and let the music carry you away. It actually reminds me quite a bit of Talk Talk, not necessarily in how it actually sounds but just in how exquisitely it's put together. With the exception of one exceedingly minor blip (more on that later), every track feels perfectly composed and paced, with 10 minute songs that seem to pass in the blink of an eye and gorgeous soundscapes that feel like portals to other worlds. Opeth or Porcupine this may not be, but if you're willing to let this album speak for itself then I think you'll find it has a lot to say.

"Drag Ropes" starts off on an almost minimalist note, with orchestral, slowly alternating chords providing background for Mikael Akerfeldt's precisely delivered clean vocals. It isn't long before Steven Wilson adds his voice to the mix as well, and the music is elaborated upon for a while before Wilson begins a repeating sort of vocal mantra. This slowly fades out, and an instrumental section begins with gorgeous piano and orchestration. "Drag Ropes" is utterly and completely different than anything Wilson or Akerfeldt has done before, but it's also utterly beautiful and features some of the most powerful and moving music either of the two has ever recorded even if it is in a more atmospheric vein than the metal for which the two have been more known in recent times. "Drag Ropes" is an amazing opener and a clear demarcation separating Storm Corrosion from Opeth or Porcupine Tree.

The title track is quite beautiful as well, featuring an acoustic guitar part as well as some winds along with delicate vocals courtesy of Wilson. The overall effect reminds me quite strongly of, of all people, Nick Drake, with soft delivery and folky atmosphere reminding quite strongly of the late Mr. Drake's work. Listening to this track, you really get a feel for how excellent and subtle a vocalist Steven Wilson can be, a facet of his musicianship which has perhaps been overlooked in the past. Additionally, while this is miles and miles away from anything Opeth has ever done, one can definitely hear the Mikael Akerfeldt stamp on the guitar part, which brings a strange and ever so faint sense of familiarity to the track. Lest the listener become too comfortable, however, at about the six minute mark the track switches gears, morphing and devolving into an almost ambient piece, replete with low dronings and vaguely atnonal atmospheres. From this sonic miasma, however, a guitar part reappears, and as it retakes center stage Wilson's vocals reappear as well. They last only briefly, however, and the track ends with gorgeous, folky instrumental melodies that give way to a brief, almost abrasive soundscape before the track fades away completely.

"Hag" begins in a very minimalist vein as well, with some very spare guitar and keyboards creating a mysterious soundscape behind extremely delicate vocals from Mr. Wilson. The track takes on a heavier tone as it progresses, developing an almost industrial sound in its final minutes. Nonetheless, it is far more concerned with atmosphere than with instrumental gymnastics, and the ambiences it does create are spectacular, haunting and beautiful all in one. Wilson's vocals, of course, are perfect for this kind of music; they're ethereal and shimmering and they enhance the atmosphere perfectly without distracting from it.

"Happy" is anything but, coming off as more unsettling than anything. With ominous, almost creepy keyboard and guitar parts and the familiar, ghostly vocal stylings of Steven Wilson, "Happy" comes off equal parts horror movie soundtrack and ambient-folk song. Despite being the shortest song on the album, it's one of the best, exquisitely composed and executed and making use of one of the widest sonic palettes this side of Talk Talk. Excellent, beautiful, disturbing stuff.

"Lock Howl" follows in a similar vein, though it's a bit more melodic than "Happy," with a picked guitar part backed perfectly by orchestral sounds and keyboards. A fully instrumental track, parts of it sound like they could have come off of Grace For Drowning, and it's probably the album's most approachable number, though a bizarre, dissonant ambient section in the middle keeps it from being too easy a listen. Nonetheless, it's definitely the easiest to digest, and fans of Grace For Drowning should find it quite enjoyable, though in my opinion it comes off as a bit of a weak link (especially in the second half). It's not that there's even anything really wrong with it, it just doesn't seem as perfect as the rest of the album, which is a pretty darn nit-picky complaint.

"Ljudet Innan," on the other hand, is anything but easy to digest. It's also one of the album's strongest tracks, in my opinion, with beautifully spare orchestrated soundscapes and some truly otherworldly vocals from Mr. Akerfeldt. The real highlight of the track, though, is the beautifully restrained guitar part that glides in halfway through the track. It's jazzy but at the same time incredibly relaxed, providing a perfect focal point amid the gorgeous ambience of the rest of the music. When Wilson's vocals come in after this, the track ratchets up another level towards nirvana, and by the time the closing strains of the track fade out the listener is left with a palpable sense of peace, a testament to the powerful atmosphere this track is able to conjur up.

Overall, this is a nearly flawless album. While the (in my opinion) slight comparative weakness of "Lock Howl" keeps it from attaining perfect masterpiece status in my eyes, this is nonetheless a stunning album and one that contains some of the finest work Wilson or Akerfeldt have ever put forward. If you are expecting this to sound like Opeth or Porcupine Tree or even some combination of the two, look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a beautiful, otherworldly trip then this is the album for you. I suspect this one will end up on more than one end of the year top-list, and I'm certain that it will end up on mine.

Creating an Ancestor List ("Ahnentafel") in Legacy Family Tree 7.5

In response to my Saturday Night Genealogy Fun post, I received an email question from a reader who asked "How do I make an Ahnentafel using my genealogy software?" ?It struck me that perhaps some readers do not know what an "ahnentafel" is...so I'll show how my three genealogy software programs create one.

Each program does this differently, with somewhat different results, so I'll go through Legacy Family Tree 7.5, Family Tree Maker 2012 and RootsMagic 5 in a series of posts.

Note that I like to use the term "Ancestor List" rather than "Ahnentafel" for this list, since it is really not a "Name Table." ?For this "Ancestor List," I want ONLY the ancestor name, birth date and place, death date and place, and marriage date and place. ?For me, a printed "Ancestor List" is much easier to use than a series of linked and printed pedigree charts.

1) ?In Legacy Family Tree 7.5, with myself highlighted on the Legacy Family View, I clicked on the "Reports" button in the Menu icon row:

2) ?In the screen above, the "Books and Other" window opened, and I want to select the "Ancestors" button from the menu in order to make my Ancestor List. ?That opens the "Ancestor Book" window:
There are five tabs (Options, Page Layout, Heading Layout, Wording 1 and Wording 2) and three buttons at the bottom of the window (Index Options, Report Options and Title Page). ?The Options tab is shown above.

On the Options tab, I made the number of Generations = 12. ?I unchecked everything else for this "Ancestor List" report.

3) ?I clicked the "Index Options" button and unchecked every box in the two tabs (Name Index), Location Index):

I clicked "OK" and was back to the "Ancestor Book" window.

4) ?I clicked on the "Report Options" button and there are eight tabs (Include, format, Privacy, Sources, Pictures, Page Setup, Header/Footer, and Fonts). ? I went through each of them and unchecked every box.

On the "Include" tab, I checked the "Marriage Information" box:

Note that I left the "Child-parent relationships" and "Children of each spouse" boxes unchecked since I don't want a list of the children of each ancestral family. ?I also left "Print source citations" unchecked for this list.

On the "Format" tab, I checked the "Don't include duplicate lines."

5) ?I clicked on the "close" button for the "Report Options" window and was back to the "Ancestor Book" window. ?I clicked on the "Preview" button (upper right-hand corner) and a 120 page Ancestor List was created. ?Here is page 1:

And page 2 (which starts the actual Ancestor List):
Based on the parameters I set, I received the names, parents names, birth dates/places, death dates/places and marriage dates/places for each of my ancestors in the 12 generations requested.

7) ?When I first tried this, I left the "Don't include duplicate lines" box on the "Format" tab of the "Report Options" window unchecked. ?I received an error message after 11 pages, and received a message that an individual had been processed 3 times" and that "You might be in an endless loop:"

I clicked on "Continue processing" and received several more of these messages, and finally cancelled the report. ?Later, I went back and increased the number of allowable duplicates to 5, and a 124 page report was created. ?I have several duplicate lines back in the 17th century.

Some format things that I noted about the "Ancestor List" Report:

* ?The Cover Page is really for a book - I would like to have the option to eliminate it (perhaps I couldn't find that option?).

* ?The months are three-letter abbreviations rather than the full spelling.

* ?The marriage line is included for both spouses in a marriage.

* ?The burial date and place is included in the list.

La demanda data del a?o 2010 cuando Oracle se hace de los derechos de Java al comprar a Sun Microsystems. Google hab?a utilizado Java dentro de su sistema Android para dispositivos m?viles, por lo que la compa??a de Larry Ellison argument? que se utiliz? c?digo de Java sin tener la licencia necesaria.

El gigante de Internet quiso llegar a un acuerdo con Oracle, cedi?ndole parte de sus ganancias de Android si demostraba la violaci?n de patentes, pero la empresa detr?s de java declino la oferta y llev? el asunto hasta los tribunales.

En una primera etapa del juicio el jurado dictamino que Google si violo el copyright de java, que era otra de las cuestiones por las que Oracle inicio la demanda. S?lo que no pudieron determinar con unanimidad si se produjo ?conforme a derecho?, que es lo que argumento Google en todo momento.

Este hecho hizo que a?n con la vulnerabilidad al copyright, no tuviera que pagar ninguna indemnizaci?n.

En la segunda etapa se trato de la violaci?n de dos patente de java al usarlo en la construcci?n de Android pero no se pudo demostrar bajo argumentos por lo que Oracle pierde la demanda y se queda sin indemnizaci?n alguna.

Por su parte Google demuestra que Android es un sistema operativo legal y comentan al respecto:

Are terrorists beyond redemption?

Terrorists are often described as beyond reason, beyond redemption. But the reality, as recent and not-so-recent history shows, is very different.

The record shows that some radical groups can be persuaded to give up the gun when the combination of inducements and local conditions is right. It's an imprecise prescription. But a combination of the heavy stick of the state, followed by giving militant leaders positive incentives to rejoin a society they often come to regret having left, seems to be at its core.

Now, scholars and researchers are looking to tease out common patterns from global successes. The Pentagon recently gave a $4.5 million grant to a group of psychologists based at the University of Maryland to conduct a five-year study on not only how to deradicalize militants, but perhaps also find ways to intervene with potential recruits before they sign up.

More than 10 years after 9/11 and following the experience of Iraq, where the violence did not ebb until the US military reached out to the Sunni groups that aided Al Qaeda militants, there's a hunger for solutions that rely less on the hammer of an artillery strike and more on the stiletto of engagement with personal motivations and the broader social context.

The Pentagon grant is just the latest money directed at multidisciplinary research efforts into the causes and conditions behind radicalization. "I've seen a major shift towards sociocultural funding. The [Department of Defense] has always done it, but it's of a very different scope now," says Michele Gelfand, a psychologist at the University of Maryland who will be working on the study.

Others have already been working on the back end of the problem.

?In Saudi Arabia, the government is planning a fivefold expansion of its flagship program dealing with Al Qaeda militants and fellow travelers.

?In Sri Lanka, nearly 10,000 former Tamil Tigers ? some previously trained as suicide bombers ? have gone through programs that include vocational training and been released, with limited further incidents.

?In Singapore and the Philippines, programs focused on giving financial support to the families of detainees have helped decrease the local members of the Al Qaeda-inspired Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

"Deradicalization" is now a growth industry in corners of the psychological and anthropological professions. Research is being published and careers are being made on it, so caution in assessing it is required. And it should be noted that, by itself, deradicalization doesn't address the grievances that fuel the drive to militancy.

To be sure, there have been many failures. Bagus Budi Pranoto, a JI member involved in an attack on the Australian embassy in 2004, was released from prison after going through Indonesia's program. In 2009, he was involved in bomb attacks against Jakarta's Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels that killed seven people, and was later gunned down in a raid of a JI safe house in Central Java.

Former Guant?namo Bay inmate Said Ali al-Shahri, a member of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, was released to Saudi custody in 2007 and quickly cycled through its rehabilitation program. By 2009, he had resurfaced as an Al Qaeda leader in Yemen. Unconfirmed reports last year claimed he had been killed.

Proponents of a deradicalization approach argue that occasional failures don't mean the programs are not working.

"The Saudi program is occasionally criticized because some graduates occasionally return to radical activities.... I think that's a misunderstanding," says Arie Kruglanski, a psychology professor at the University of Maryland who studies radical groups and will be leading the Pentagon-funded research program.

"If a person leaves the program and is inserted into a social milieu that influences him to return to previous beliefs, that doesn't mean it didn't work: People can always be reradicalized," he says.

It isn't all about talking, either. Omar Ashour, a professor at the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter in England and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution's Doha Center, wrote in his book, "The De-Radicalization of Jihadists," that the heavy hand of the state played an important role in the most thorough deradicalization successes. Perhaps the best recent case is that of Egypt's Gamaa al-Islamiyah, or "Islamic Group."

The group's roots date to the late 1970s, when a group of young Islamists broke from Egypt's dominant Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood. While they shared the vision of an Egypt eventually governed by Islamic law, these youths took issue with the Brothers' willingness to cooperate with the modern state and minority groups to pursue that goal. The men were heavily influenced by the puritanical Salafi strain of Islam emanating from Saudi Arabia and viewed participation in electoral politics as tantamount to a sin.

Members of the fledgling organization participated in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981, an event that led to a mass roundup and imprisonment of Islamist militants. Soon after, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the current leader of Al Qaeda, created an offshoot and competitor of the group, called Al-Jihad. Neither group was known for compromise.

Yet today, the Egyptian branches of both organizations have renounced violence. And in Dr. Ashour's eyes, the Islamic Group has undergone an "ideological deradicalization," the abandonment of violence not just for practical reasons, but a rejection of its acceptability.

What happened? In the mid-1990s, the group waged low-level warfare against the Egyptian state, with hundreds dead on both sides and eventually more than 30,000 alleged militants and supporters in indefinite government detention. Militant leaders were growing older and increasingly worn out inside prisons, and their families on the outside were suffering. The group's leaders in prison began to make overtures to the government.

QUIZ: How well do you know Middle East geographyThen, in 1997, militants associated with the Islamic Group carried out a massacre: Armed with guns, they hunted down busloads of tourists at Hatshepsut's Temple near Luxor in upper Egypt, murdering four Egyptians and 58 foreigners. The attack horrified Egypt as well as many of the group's senior leaders, and led to an even harsher crackdown. By the early years of the last decade, the group's imprisoned ideologues were publishing books from prison and even running a website denouncing terror tactics as illegitimate within Islam, an effort that trickled down to the rank and file.

"Everything changed after Luxor," Montasser El-Zayat, a lawyer and former militant who served jail time, told the Monitor in 2004. "A new thinking came about that such attacks were not only counterproductive but wrong."

Ashour recounts talking to a former jailed militant a decade ago who said the shift of the leadership was crucial in changing rank-and-file attitudes. While Al Azhar, an Islamic university associated with the Egyptian state, had been telling militants that violence was "un-Islamic" for years, its claims weren't heeded.

"He told me, 'the message can be very strong, but the messenger is more important. That's when ... the rank and file will listen,' " says Ashour. "This message just isn't the same as when it's from charismatic leadership."

Also crucial was the government's easing back on repression in response to deals being made. Sometimes, not much more is required in terms of additional resources, as radicals often are seeking a way back into society. As Mr. Kruglanski puts it, "the life of a terrorist is not exactly a cakewalk ? and after a while they get tired of it."

Talk alone is insufficient, Kruglanski says. "In that sense, the Saudi program makes a lot of sense," he says. "An organization that takes care of the family of the detainees is important."

But while the well-resourced Saudi program is one thing , sometimes all that's required is to make sure militants get a job and find a place in society, "not necessarily providing anything extra," says Kruglanski.

Today in Egypt, Salafis are competing in elections, something they would have scorned less than a decade ago. The Islamic Group is among them, taking 13 seats in the new parliament. The name of its new organization? The Building and Development Party.

They still have what most in the West would consider regressive views about the role of women and minorities in society, and still desire to replace civil law with their own Islamic code. But if solutions to violent radicalism are being sought, there is clearly a way forward.
